My horse is very quiet. He had been hunted and hacked mostly when i got him. Just recently i have been working on getting him working correctly on the flat. Basic lateral movements and flexing him. We are doing this gently and slowly.

Over the past week or so i have been continueing with work and noted some strange behaviour. During our warm up, first lap of the manage he will stop and put in a small buck. Then walk a few steps stop and buck.

He does this approximtly 3 times during our first lap of manage. He then works beautifully as normally with absolutly no problems! He does not do this if we go out hacking.

He is happy as larry and showing absolutly no other signs or pain anywhere to me.

Thoughts? Bad manners and having me on? Saddle? Back? Or somehting i may not of considered?

Thinking about gettin back lady and saddle fitter out to check him over (his takc was fitted by master saddler and regularly has back checked)

Thanks

It could be back, saddle, teeth or anything in the range of what can go wrong. And it may just be that you have started to make bits of him work which haven't done before - like us if we start a new kind of excercise. If he seems happy I would just carry on but if he starts showing more severe signs of discomfort get saddle & back checked out first. How old is he?

Oooh hadnt thought about teeth! He's 8yrs old. Its odd because he's very happy with everything apart from the first lap of arena!

My lad had a bit of this when we started really working on walk/halt transitions a while back, I think it was because he was feeling fresh at the time and I wasn't letting him go off hell for leather round the school  after a while he figured out he wasn't getting away with it and it really wasn't bothering me (they were weeny "cute" bucks) and in the end he decided it really wasn't worth the effort.

If you're sure it's not pain related maybe it could be this ^ if he's used to getting out and about and just going
