I found a yard that sounds good, going to have a look at it tomorrow.
DIY Livery, outdoor arena, good hacking, xc jumps, not too expensive. 20 minute drive away.

But it has a railway line going past it, you have to go over the track (through one of those gates) to get into the yard. I'm hoping that there will be fencing around the yard to stop escapees, but I won't know till I go see. If they had any problems with it being there they'd have no liveries surely :S

The other thing is that straw and hay are included in the charge. Roo is currently on grass livery, because she always had a cough in the morning after being in the stable (These stables are in an indoor barn, looking at the pics on the website it looks light and airy) so maybe she'll be ok in there.
And her fetlocks seemed to fill up and she'd be slightly stiff on a morning. Wonder if theres a supplement or something I could use to help. Or maybe I could stable bandage her legs? Would certainly make it easier to hold her weight if she has a stable.

What do you think?
Would the trains near by be a big problem? And can the issues in the stable be managed?

TBH, I'd want to keep a horse with Roo's issues out at night, rather than in a barn, which is inside no matter how light and airy. Even if you use shavings yourself, other liveries will be using straw, which could affect her.
As for trains, so long as there is a good boundary fence, all should be well. The first long hack I went on with my mare we went alongside a railway line with a train passing us, under a railway bridge with a train going over us and then, while we were dismounted having a picnic, *another* train went over the viaduct at the back of the picnic area. There were 6 horses out that day and not one turned a hair at any of the trains.

Is that 20 minutes my direction :D

Global Herbs do a supplement for puffy legs/windgalls, if it's anything like the Rig Calm, it will be good stuff but if I suppose the best thing for horses with puffy legs or that get a bit stiff is freedom of movement and 24/7 grazing, if she's has a bit of an allergy when kept in, keeping her in a stable within a barn would be asking for trouble I recon, but if they can offer 24/7 turnout and you'd have the option to bring her in should you needed to odd times that's wouldn't be too bad I guess.

Providing the rail way is not a main line (like the ones near us :D) you'll be ok otherwise you spend half your hacking time waiting for the little man to open up and let you across.... as you'll know.

Sounds alright though, we have some spaces at our yard :D but no doubt it would be too far away and you'd have to put up with me :p

My old yard was right next to a railway line and we had to ride under railway bridge on our way out and back to the yard.

None of the horses made a fuss unless what we called the 'wishy washy' train came past which made an odd noise (think it used to clean the tracks or something) and even then they only looked up and had the odd spook.

The bridge was fine too although if you were under it when a train came it could get a bit exciting as you didn't always get a lot of warning a train was coming as they used to come out of woodland which deadened the sound. My boy would quite happily stand about 10 yards in front of the bridge while a train came by without batting an eyelash - the one time I got caught under it - he took off like he'd been stung for about 15 strides, realised what it was and pulled up :-)

If it is the yard you showed me last night RG it does look good but I would be slightly worried about keeping her in at night unless you can control the cough and swelling. The yard Pharaoh was broken at had a railway line right above the school and he never had a problem with it and when we moved to the yard down the road the hacking was also near the same line and none of the horses were bothered by it. Have a look at the yard tomorrow and see what you think - after all you may not like it.
Oh and global herbs things are usually pretty good, Pharaoh's symptoms definitely weren't as bad when he was on the sarc-ex (even though he wasnt on it for sarcoids).

Damn :( Not the answers I was looking for :/

I need to get her off this yard ASAP as it won't be long before she is the only horse out on a night and I can't accept that.
The yard I'm looking at doesnt do grass livery. So that's not an option (unless I can find a different yard).

I think if I like it there, I'll move her, manage her as best I can, and if she can't cope with it, look for another yard (at least she'll have some company). If I soak her hay, maybe try to get stable near a door if there is one, leave her out as long as possible on a night, turn out early in a morning. And put stable bandages on her legs (if stables are big it may be ok)

Kenzo: I'd love to be on a yard with you, but I'd talk you to death :P Tis a bit too far out I think :( I will look at the supplement though, that might help :D

Trains sound a bit like an advantage now lol,
Will let you all know how it goes tomorrow, :D

Trains are no problem my old yard had fields next to the track, we rode over the level crossing etc. All fine with it bar the steam trains that sometimes came along!

Re living in, I perhaps wouldn't be so hesitent if they weren't on straw. If she has COPD or similar then living in on straw will not be good for her. Can you have a chat with new YO and see if there is any solution?

I will ask tomorrow if theres anything they can do to make things easier on her.
Maybe if I can have an end stable, and buy my own bedding in.
I'll definitely soak the hay.
And then I suppose its a case of see how she goes on it :)

The fact that none of you have mentioned what was worrying me (horses escaping onto the track) means that it's probably me being silly lol. I suppose it will be well fenced off so I can put my mind at ease there :)

Hi RG

You see loads of horses in fields beside railway lines - they get used to it, so I think that as long as the fencing is good, that should be a worry.

Regarding the legs swelling up, my TB is exactly the same. I've got him in equilibrium stable boots on his back legs and they work a treat.
Hope it all works out for you.

Big Cob isn't happy on straw, but he was stabled for a while in a big barn where others were on straw and he was fine :)

Get some of the Thermatex type wraps, or the magnetic ones, they'll help with the puffiness. Also quicker to put on/off.

Definately easier to manage her weight. Check how long to soak though, soaking too long will lose the goodness. Try haylege instead, unless there's a reason she can't have it.

Regarding swelling legs I read a few years ago that people put a mug of tea (without milk) into their horses night time feed and their legs didnt swell. It makes them go to the loo in the night therefore does not cause fluid retention. Dont know if anyone has tried that.

I went to view the yard today.
Its fab! :D I've put down a deposit.

The stable she will be in is in a big barn with not many stables in, and the end door (near her) is open 24/7 so there'll be plenty of air circulation.
The people all seem friendly and the horse Roo will probably go in with looks like sweetie.
Everything that I need at a yard is there :D
As well as the trains there is an aeroplane runway too, but the YM said the horses soon get used to it :D

Moving there as soon as, always takes me a while to settle in a new place but I'm sure it will be great there :D
