Friend currently looking for horse, had big disappointment this week with one she thought she had bought, but it didn't work out.

Friend is a keen novice and I consider her to be a sympathetic rider with kind hands. She currently rides a cob that pulls a bit, but she doesn't want anything that will knock her confidence. Horse is required to hack alone & in company in area with high proportion of farm traffic.

I've seen this on Horsemart - HM014F154 if the link doesn't work. Do you think it would be wasted on someone on only wants to hack and do local novice/prelim dressage - although in two years time she may change her mind and decide she does want to jump after all!

Have seen a few locally, and after this weeks let-down, don't really want to travel as far as Lincolnshire to view, but this seems nice.

I'd say it's sound like he'd get bored just hacking and PL/novice dressage tbh, it sounds like he thrives on work and new challenges. And a lot to pay for just doing that too.

I'd say look for something a little older, maybe ex-pony/riding club/eventer horse etc that'smaybe seeking a quieter but still active life from serious competition?
 
My instinct would be that be that he looks a forward type, and if she's a bit novicey, likely to have her confidence knocked, she may be better of with a steadier type....

I may be wrong, but that's the impression I got from the ad and piccies. May be worth going to see him, but it is quite far.
 
I agree with Binky, the horse in advert is being advertised FOR his jumping ability I think, plus I wouldnt consider him a novice ride.

Would be better probably looking for a happy hacker.

I only say this because he sounds exactly how I'd advertise my mare if I was doing a sale ad for her tbh.
She is very responsive off the aids and can be a 'all member of the family horse', plus everything else put in the ad, but not for a novice or someone who would be offput confidence wise. Never strong or silly or naughty, but just all there and always ready for the next command and on the ball ready todo whatever asked. Which somtimes involved a novice rider or nervous rider inadvertantly asking her to do something without realising they were [ie, moving a leg back a fraction - direct canter transition, flying change, etc], then be surprised by this and clamping legs in response, which then would be thought as go forwards....you get the picture :)
She would tolerate a novice riding, but it would be short lived and only a matter of time before she got 'sour' of not being worked to her max or kept 'busy'. She'd also do a very nice dressage test, but equally so,she wouldnt be happy doing this solely as she was a complete jumping pony at heart! [Point proved by accidently jumping a 5bar wooden gate at her first hunter trial in ages the other week XD lmao. Bless her heart.]

Well I think the horse looks lovely. I think their is a difference between someone being 'novice' and 'nervous'. I would say go and have a look and if your friend likes the horse then they can develop together. It might be a fair distance for you but Lincolnshire is very nice and even if the horse is a no go- you could have lunch in a little village pub on the way home
 
Agree with what's been said, really. Not for a novice. I suspect you friend would find her too much and lose confidence. Nice horse, though, for someone wanting to do PC/RC but imo a bit expensive.
 
Thank you all for your comments. Friend is not at all nervous, but I am conscious that the confidence is something we need to preserve!

The reason I say that is that she has returned to riding over the past 2 years after having a break of almost 20yrs (she is 42). Friend now wants her own horse to hack and do local dressage and maybe a little showing. I have seen her ride 6 different horses over the past 2 weeks, and she has been quietly confident on all of them (although we did have the "Oooooh, I'm a bit scared about getting on that" moment or two!.

She is currently riding one of hours which can pull like a train if she thinks she's about to be overtaken in trot, but is otherwise pretty bombproof.

I saw this ad and liked the horse - probably because I'm sub-consciously ACTUALLY looking for myself!!!! I am wary of something that may get bored - all the ones I've taken her to see so far have been between 14-16yrs old, so would cope with the quieter life.

He sounds absolutley amazing!! I would consider my self as a novice rider but if i was looking for a horse he would be my ideal! I think he would give your friend lots of confidence and then im sure she would want to do some jumping. The only thing i would say is he almost sounds too good to be true so would need to take time with viewings!
