Im viewing an N reg tdi300. Does anyone have a helpful opinion on this as a towing vehicle as I have heard good and bad things. If I could afford a tdi5 or jeep etc I would but this partcular car has come up at £900 with 12months MOT, pretty much my budget. Any helpful advice greatly recieved :)

Love my disco! Had a tdi300 which towed brilliantly (16.3 and 17hh in together). Now have td5 and am just as happy with that.

Hope this helps! 😃

They tow amazingly. Not as fast as Japanese types, but they will tow anything anywhere. I will reply in the morning as well though as there are some key points to look for so you don't end up with a lemon. Get a good one though and you're laughing!!

We had a jeep Cherokee if it could go wrong it did, no wonder it was low mileage, swapped in for TD5 and is great! Tows our IW 511 and two 16.1 and 18.3 a dream.

I had a 300tdi. It was a bargain a friend of a friend was selling. I didn't hpi it as guessed a friend would screw a friend over but they did and it turns out it was cat c with radiator damage. Unfortunately I only found this out when it blew up when I got off the ferry in France towing my ifor 511 !!! Just be careful when buying cheap and always hpi !!!

We've got one and it's fab, wouldn't use anything else! Also a proficient mechanic finds them easy to fix as still quite basic at that age.

Loved our old one, then we got a TD5 which was fab. We only sold as we had 2 4x4's which was a tad excessive.....and needed a small car as I was working further away. We kept the L200 pickup as it was easier for the dogs, jobs around the field etc etc....and I hated the thought of getting the TD5 dirty! :o

I have a T reg one. Had issues with rust, which apparently is quite common, had loads of welding done to it. She tows my Suffolk cross, and my 15'3 heavy cob easily. Did have a lot of engine issues (overheating), which cost a lot of money, as eventually needed to put a new, second hand engine in. This still overheated under load, and after seeking advice on here, and a land rover forum, turned out to be a blocked radiator, which a LR specialist overlooked several times. Cost £90 for a new rad which OH fitted, and no problems since. Very easy to work on, OH does most of the work himself.

I love Discos, I currently have a V reg. Got it after my N reg failed it's MOT dramatically, needing LOADS of welding. Be careful, 12 months MOT is great but doesn't mean it will sail through the MOT next year :)

We've just bought an N reg 300tdi, I haven't towed with it yet, so can't comment personally but have been told by other owners that they are good. It is a lovely car to drive around in though and very capable off road so I'm sure it will be equally good as a tow car. As other people have said, they are notorious for rusting. You need to particularly check the boot area and above the rear wheel arches inside the doors (near where the seat belts attach) but check everywhere or find out from the owner whether it has had any welding done.

Love them, we are on our 3rd (all 1998). How many miles has it got on the clock? Ours all had no common problems In fact nothing apart from normal wear and tear stuff) apart from the first two both had the head gasket go at around 180,000 miles. The first when we still owned it and the second after we had sold it on to somebody we knew. The garage love working on them as they are so straight forward and as a bonus parts are relatively cheap.

They will tow 3 tonne and hardly know its there. I had an old one for two years and as long as you budget for a big bill at MOT their fine. I bought mine for £725 and two years later sold it for £600 covered in lane scrapes. I needed it to tow a 2 tonne trailer used the same amount off diesel with the trailer as it did without, when I put the horse trailer on I would forget it was there They are very basic though.
