Crap photo so sorry but weight and muscle if u can get an idea on it from this. Getting some conflicting opinions and im feeling a bit down about it all atm...long story
weight is good, more topline needed. muscle tone good over the front of horse but back end needs more. this suggests to me that the horse is working on the forehand. hill work will help as will pole work. lots of transitions between paces and within the pace will encourage the horse to work more from behind. good luck as nice horse
Judging by the pic he is stretching round, therefore he is well enough to not want any more weight putting on,i would work with what you have and build his topline
He looks stunning so bugger what other people say,he is yours,so do by him what you think is best...if we all listened to the know it alls our horses would be in a right mess...we owners know them best
welsh would be rubbish for comparison I'm afraid as just completely different!
In the second pic of your sig he is working nicely and does seem to have more of a bum, is that one recent too? some horses can look diff under saddle, I know mine can lose pounds as he actually decides to apply some abs!.
I would much prefer to see them like him rather than overloaded.
Thankyou all very helpful. His neck is really rather impressove I'll find a different pic for his neck lol. He is just a big 17hh 7year old in his first season of proper work. I do sometimes struggle to keep him light in front because he is just so big! We are getting there though. Doing leg yeild in walk to canter to walk to canter trot serpentines , rein back to trot etc getting much better from when I first started. He is a stress head aswell so not easy to keep weight on and looked poor at te end of winter... Tis ard when the know it alls actually do know it all though haha and have the results to match
well at that height and age I would anticipate that he is probably only just growing into himself. and as you say first season of proper work. don't be too hard on him or yourself you are doing all the right things schooling wise and as you say he looks better than when you started so you are obviously doing something right. and at 7 better to do it right than quickly IMO.
He looks like he is cruising in that trot pic and has a cracking jump. Franks bottom has never been an issue lol, in fact we only ever work on reducing anything of Franks! he was super chunky when bought (fat).

Horses naturally gain weight through the summer to lose it in the winter,it is good for their metabolism etc...it is us as owners that want to see them WELL covered all yr round
tell em all to piss off, they probably have FAT and unhealthy, your boy at his age and height will have another yr of filling out to do yet
He is beautiful. exactly what I am after!!! I think he looks fit and well. Agree a tad more topline but he isnt far off. Topline is hard to describe but you will know when you see.
my boy looks very similar - he is out of work at the moment and out 24/7 but maintains a lovely neck and shoulder. His back end though justs disappear into the never never and when he is in work I really have to work him from behind and lift his front. he never looks poor, lovely shiny coat but can occasionally see ribs which I immediately think arggh too thin. he isnt of course and I asked the vet recently and he said he is exactly right for this time of year.
