Hi all,
OH and i have been pony hunting over the last few weeks and with a limited budget have found it very hard to find anything im even slightly interested in.
So today we went to view a 13.2 grey mare 6 years old, we turned up expected to see her ridden but no jockey :S, so i jumped on, she was very green but the nicest ive tried.
Now to the point the owner did mention she could be quite marish which is why she was cheap, but when we put her in the stable she attempted to bite her owner and owners daughter in the face numerous times, she did'nt show any bad behaviour towards me or OH. How much would you expect to pay for a pony like this? she isnt papered and is verryy green!!

Sorry about the lonng post

I think the question is - is she for sale at a price you would be willing to pay? You've allready stated she was within your budget - so the price is obviously right.

There's also mareish and plain ill mannered........

I thought it was strange too, she was fine when i was stroking her over the door but as soon as her owner cames near her ears were pinned back and she was really trying to bite.. maybe they've let her get away with to much??? The other thing is shes been cooped up in her stable for 2 days with no turnout and she isnt in regluar work could this be why shes grumpy??
She would be out 24/7 with me with hay and rugs ect i don't know if this would help?
Thanks for the replies.

depends who the pony is for....i do not have children but certainly would not even concider the pony if it was for a child if it bites, there are too many nice ponies out there for good money especially coming into winter.
I knowingly bought a good horse that was known for biting................never again.

No the pony is for me (Im barely 5ft). The owners said she had'nt done this before (which ive heard too many times!)and seemed very happy and sweet out of the stable.

A friends little mare had cystic ovaries, she was nice as pie to some people and others she hated with avengance (sp?!) It could even come down to perfume or hair colour with her! She was 3 when her behaviour started to be noticed.

That was my thought exactly, i always think horses should have as much turn out as possible. It's so hard to make a decision!!!

A scan detected them and yes hormone treatment is available, I'm not sure what it was called (it was a long time ago now!) others on here will be able to give you better info on the condition.

Unless she is really cheap and/or you are confident in handling a marish mare who has shown agression I would advise to steer clear. They are hard work at times!!
She would need to have some very good attributes before you can overlook the marishness - remember, it is coming into winter now so her seasons should be slowing down but wait til spring when they start up again, potential night'mare'!!!
If you are considering hormone treatment you should bear in mind that it isn't always cheap - Regumate is over £100 per litre (lasts approx 3 months).

Also I suppose it depends where you would be keping her as even if she was sweet with you she could bite others who were passing her box or field and this may prove diff. if someone else had to handle her in your absence.
I personally would be inclined to say no...its a buyers market at the mo and coming into winter now would have thought you would have more chance of getting something within your budget.
If she is very cheap however, you still really like her and if like skewbald says you could have a prolonged trial period..might be worth a punt?
