Hi All,

I am thinking (possibly wishfully!) about getting a project horse to bring on over the spring / summer and then sell. I now have transport but only one pony so thought it might be nice to get 2 out to local shows etc. Given the current climate, I am not looking to make any money, but I would want to get back what I have put in.

Could I please have your opinions on these ponies?

I know some will be purely speculation but I am new to this so any input / advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!!!

First two are too young. Number three seems like a good buy. Number four why is it that age and only just been sat on, expensive for what it is in this climate. Out them all I'd only view number three personally.

Someone in CR has done a post on how to make money off a project pony - it was on the front page yesterday, so might be worth looking that up.

Good luck!

Number one is gorgeous! But you would ned to keep him for a while obviously.... I can see him making money of he is nice under saddle although is he the right height if he turns out to be a spirited youngster because he sure looks like one!

As for the two cobs together... Something doesn't sit right with me there. Lovely looking, not bog ponies by any description so why aren't they willing to put some work into them and sell them at a much higher price?

Number four sounds like a starter who became a non starter.....

The 6 year old may well make you some money depending on how 'not novicey' she turns out to be :o

Do be careful, I'm sorry to be voice of doom, but there are plenty of ponies out there that are passed on because of behavioural/veterinary issues. You can easily end up out of pocket with a few expensive vet visits or expensive ssues with saddle fitting etc.

Do it for the pleasure of doing it by all means, but be prepared to make a loss as well, it doesn't always work out as planned.

I thought the op was new to buying a project animal not new to riding. If you are a novice rider op I'd forget the idea.

agree with this^^

also one of them (think it was the 3rd) is offered on loan with a view to buy. I doubt the seller is looking for somone to then pass it on again? :o

I think wench means that 'not novice ride' could make it more difficult to sell on in future, rather than the op is a novice; I stand to be corrected on that though. I did look at OP's previous posts and noticed that you'd posted about starting a family; if that is still the case then I wouldn't be taking a project on tbh.

Yes I did meant the "not novice ride" would put me off as a project as, dependant on its habits, could limit it's market to sell at

Thanks for all of your responses.

Touchstone - no baby plans for this year ;)
Unbalanced - thanks for the note, I have read the article, very interesting :)

I am not a novice rider, and not looking to make money, just thinking about bringing something on and taking it out and about whilst I have a free space in the trailer. It is only first thoughts - OH probably won't like the idea anyway!!!
