I'm thinking of offering livery to people who want to come to the area for all the agricultural shows, BS, BD etc as we are close to a lot of show centres. It would only be in summer when my horses are out and I'd have 4 stables and an individual field available which is away from my own horses. We also have a self contained granny flat type set up which has it's own microwave, kettle etc as well as bathroom, access to utility room, sitting room and could sleep up to 4 people with 2 on sofa beds.

I also have an outdoor school which could be used and could provide hay and bedding.

Do you think this is something people would use? How much would you think would be reasonable charge?

Yes I think its a good idea. When we were taking our PC teams down to events we sometimes had to find livery for a night or 2 with us being miles away from where our area things were held. we camped in tents & think we paid about £10/15 a night per horse, that was for stable & bedding but we took our own hay. Sometimes we got the use of an arena too xx

Local stabling list for Horse Trials offers stabling at £25 or £30 in reasonably close vicinity to venue. Some people offer extra services for more money (mucking out!) some offer free use of school, B&B is usually paid for at local rates and those with B&B prefer to take stabling bookings from people who will pay for B&B as well.

Having been involved with managing local stabling for events I'd say make sure you get the money upfront, or at least a healthy deposit at time of booking, don't let them into the stables without getting the remainder of the money. Be aware that there will be stressed competitors and they will not hold back on letting you know if things are wrong. Be prepared to muck out all the stables you have let out yourself, even if they have been told they must leave stables clean. Poo picking will NOT be done. And finally be careful if you get two different groups of people booked in. There was a stand up fight in one local yard when two bitter rivals turned up.

After having said that, most people are absolutely lovely and it's fun having them around.

To get most bookings I'd make sure you have your name down with whoever arranges local stabling for the venues near you.
