I have been trying to sell on my childrens 10.2hh lead rein and first ridden pony for a short while but the market is awful at the moment. Im also looking out for something around the 14hh mark for me. Would you consider an exchange or can you forsee a whole load of issues ? Thankyou for your opinions !

We occasionally do swaps/ part exchanges at my worm but the other horse has to fit in our training programme and has to be assessed thoroughly as its a big risk.

Logically i would have thought finding a swap was harder than finding one to buy but the risks are the pretty much the same. You have not only to find someone with the right 14hh but they also have to need and like you 10hh - easier to do two separate transactions ?

I have friends who have done it very sucessfully.

I would think that this could work really well, especially with children's ponies. I have thought about swapping (as a loan) our 12.2 pony who would suit a confident pc type child for something smaller and ploddier for my daughter to learn on, as he has more potential than we can do justice to. I would imagine that we would be ready for our pony in a year or two, about the same time that an older child would outgrow him. I would worry about the level of care that a different home could offer but, as long as we had similar approaches and kept in touch, both ponies could benefit.
