I think I have been told off, well in a roundabout way.......
Had my first lesson with instructor on Monty tonight and it was the first time she has met him. Had my finger's crossed that it would go well as she is not too keen on D, well she does like him but she thinks he is stubborn, pig ignorant and rude

(I have to say, that does pretty much sum him up)
The questions started about Monty, what's he done, where did he come from etc then we got on to the subject of me trying him which is when it started going downhill. I didn't see him being ridden first

, I didn't canter him before I bought him and the BIG no no that the vets that vetted him were his vets

(although they are a very professional practice)
The outcome of it all is, is that his saddle doesn't fit

so saddle shopping I go

but on the whole after some work to iron out a few probs he will make a lovely chap

So quite pleased with that

just need to have a chat with him to make sure he doesn't spring any suprises on us when my instructor's about

Anyone else had any 'tellings off' from their instructors after buying a horse?

No - but I bought my instructors horse so she couldn't really tell me off!

I suppose so in a roundabout kind of way, although not for the method of purchasing, more along the lines of is he the horse for me. In mitigation this was very late at night after I had called her for urgent assistance with wire cutters after my cob had got himself wedged between a fence and a dry stone wall ! She asked if there was any chance that I could send him back to his breeder

Six years on still got him and ok he is a) a pain sometimes and b) would probably be competing at a much higher level with someone else, but I wouldn't swap him

Yes , but the yard owner who was also my instuctor , didn't give me any advice on vetting or offer to come along with me to see the horse . She knew I was inexperienced too !

I try really hard to coach the person in front of me on the horse they have, and not tear holes in everything. I will tell them their saddle doesn't fit if I think it is affecting the welfare of the horse, or a better one would dramatically improve their riding, and I have very occasionally suggested they get a different horse if I think the one they have might kill them! I think it's mostly about how you say something, rather than what you say, as with most horses/riders there is room for improvement (certainly is with me/mine), but I think encouragement is the way forward, not making you feel like a twit.

Are you sure she is the right instructor for you?!

I would personally find that really hard to deal with to be honest as the instructor is there to help you not comment on the circumstances on how you bought your horse...I spose it does sound like you are on good terms and respect her opion but to be honest it would make me uncomfortable to then have a lesson as I would feel a little awkard....
I moved to my own field though due to people giving me their opions all of the time. I know for a fact people would moan like mad if they saw my field as it has not been topped, is right next to a busy b road and is not at all horsey really...but it works for me...im the happiest I ever have been, plus my horses are so used to the traffic that they are brill when riding out...
I would go and treat yourself to a new saddle and just not worry...Ive come to the thought of now just taking it on the chin when people comment about my horses....what works for me doesnt always work for others...an instruction manual does not come with a horse when you buy it....
I also believe it is all about luck and feeling when buying a horse.

My instructor is very good and has got me through so many problems with D. After a bit of a fall out over D and me going off in a right strop and trying a different instructor at the beginning of the year

I do think she is the right instructor for me

I think she is just concerned about the way I bought Monty because of D, his health problems and his behaviour she just didn't want me to end up in the same position as I was last year with yet another unsuitable horse.
I know I probably should never of bought D but I wouldn't swap him for the world now

As for Monty, it just felt right
