I've always had to sedate my boy with an oral sedative before clipping.

This time around using the same sedate prescribed as normal (at least I believe) had absolutely no effect!

He weighs 475 and we normally give around 400-450 dosage (as he is very very sensitive to doping and due to past incidents I have always been instructed to underdose). However this time the drug had no effect at all.

He was then given the full sedative syringe! (Against my knowledge - I am aware that topping up sedative has very little effect) which also had no effect on him at all.

I am quite honestly flabbergasted! He is normally completely out of it on sedation but he was not at all this time - he was exactly like normal and just as awake: the clippers were not coming anywhere close!

Do you have any suggestions or reasons why? I'm feeling rather peeved about my loss of £40 as the stuff had no effect. I will be ringing the vet tomorrow for advice, but for now do any of you have any explanations?!

Was he already wound up?, or after giving the sedation, was there alot going on around him? If they are exposed to too much stimulus the oral sedation is not very effective

Was he already tense before you gave it to him.

Annoyingly I was not present when administrating it: I normally am but this time my y/o (who does the clipping because I can't clip a straight line to save my life!) sedated him for me.

However in the past before giving him the sedative he has been slightly tense and the sedative was successful. Do you think that could be the reason?

There is definitely a possibility: he may have been put on edge by the y/o rather than me sedating him. Little was going on around as everyone else but his field buddy had been turned out - that might have made him more anxious though because he likes to be one of the first out in the mornings!

Lesson learnt I guess - sedate him myself next time!

No need to worry. It simply doesn't work if swallowed. This is the most common reason people think it doesn't work. Poor administration.
Your YO probably gave it like a wormer.
