If I buy some cowboy boots from the USA which would be around £70.00 plus £17.50 carriage, would I be charged VAT/import duty?

Where can I find out?

I know my size and in the UK they cost about £140, so it needs to be a reasonable saving to make it worthwhile.

If they are sent by DHL or a courier then yes you will definitely have to pay and it will be about a third of the total cost of the item plus shipping so in this case between £25 and £30. IF they send them through the normal post there is a chance that customs will not pick it up and you won't have tp pay BUT you will then not have any insurance if the items go missing.

Do you pay tax on a headcollar from Quillin, does anyone know? Am debating whether to order as the postage is $49.95, the headcollar $100 making total cost for headcollar and delivery £75 (=$150).
If I get clobbered for tax too it will be how much? do they tax on value of the goods or include postage?

Have you considered looking on the USA version of Ebay for cowboy boots - often 'last seasons' styles go for next to nothing. Presume you're looking at Ariats - you can get bigger savings on the really top quality ones such as Justin, Tony Lama, Acme and :swoon: Lucchese
Some sellers will put a very nominal value on the packaging to bring the import costs down a bit...don't ask them to do this in your emails tho!!!!

Don't know if this website will help you

I used to travel back and forth from the states a lot because of my job , and Customs and Excise are actually very strict in the UK- I've known them also to seize shipments if the correct VAT/Duty etc hasn't been fully paid- if everything is done by the book you've nothing to worry about though!!

Also have you tried Boot Barn for your boots?- I've been the the oone in Las Vegas and its crammed full of Cowboy Boots etc and they are really cheap.

Hope that helps!

Thank, that is really useful.

I think I will wait until I go there - and then wear them back home!

I bought some Ariats when I was in the USA last year at a really good price, as the £/$ rate was good.
