Just bought 13.5 bag @ £60.00 and Romeo wont touch it! Im introducing it gradually just added a handful into his normal yucky pedigree stuff and he wont so much as sniff the bowl... He is a ghetto dog with no standards! Any ideas on how i convince him the upmarket stuff is better lol!

Try wetting it so it releases its delicous aroma, also adding in some tinned sardines. Are you adding it to his previous food gradually as it is likely to upset his tummy.

I do understand your angst our pup never really liked Fish4dogs or Orijen so is on a raw diet only

Have just noticed you are adding gradual please excuse my senior moment.

Yep just adding a handful in but its even put him off his normal food. He stole 900g of beef mince that i was about to cook lasagne with he destroyed it in 3 mins when i went out the room. Think he is trying to tell me something!

Yes I think he is trying to tell you something:D We persevered with our pup and she did eat it when she was hungry but we never ordered anymore and as I said we put her on to raw.

Yes i wanted to go raw but got scared, i couldnt find a supplier and was lost after reading so much info i just didnt want to mess it up. This has just confirmed it needs to be done. I spoke to my vet about going raw who completly slammed it. I need a raw coach/mentor.

I really need to sit down think and plan it as he loved the mince.

When we took our pup to the vet she asked what we were feeding her and we said raw, she replied why she is not a wolf, so we changed vets. Our new vet at a big teaching practice asked us the same question and when we said raw she was very pleased and said she wished more people fed raw.

I got asked if it was because I couldnt afford to feed him "properly" I went asking for help switching n what i got was totally put off. Ive found a raw feeding supplier local who delivers in 2 weeks time. He is willing to sort out 2 weeks of meals label them and bad them in daily bags so it will happen.

I would lift it and offer it again, he won't starve himself.

Raw really isn't a big deal, my young one was on raw since he was weaned, I don't really do the ratio thing so I am probably doing in wrong :o but he gets chicken legs or carcasses, tripe, heart, minced chicken with bone in, liver and kidney sometimes, lamb necks or spines, tones of butchers bones, he looks really well on it.

Prize Choice, Natural Instinct, Durham Animal Feeds are all good suppliers.
You'll get tonnes of help and support over the web! Vets are vets, the same as doctors are doctors, they are not nutritionalists, and are paid lots to sell certain brands of dry food, some are more amenable than others. My vets are not keen on raw feeding but they respect my decision.
Lots of people I know have switched to raw feeding as there are so many digestive and allergy problems in my breed, and all are fully converted.

yes the vet tried to tell me to buy this science plan stuff said it was the best food on the, market for pups. I think my vets are a little dim : )

Its literally uncooked meat, as in what you get from the butchers/supermarket. There is an art to feeding it and a very good sticky on here all about it x

LadyT, there are loads of ways to feed raw, you can go to a butcher or supermarket and DIY, you can do what I do and source from a guy who supplies greyhound trainers :p this would be similar to what Durham do, selling big bags of bones, tripe, minced chicken, chicken carcasses (the ones I get are hand cut and human grade so not cheap crap, but still £5 for almost a month's worth), offal etc they are firms who sell specifically to raw feeders (I think Landywoods is another?), companies like Prize Choice and Natural Instinct which sell handy ice-cream style tubs or packages of things like tripe, chicken, turkey, rabbit, salmon etc, their lamb necks/ribs/spines are also individually packaged which is really handy if they have to go to kennels or you take them on holiday etc.

My butcher is more than happy to give me bones as he has to pay to get rid of them and I take them off him for free and usually buy a steak or some chicken legs too.

Thought it all came pre-packed though? Thing that puts me off it is (a) I am vegetarian so I don't have meat in my house in general and (b) surely you have to keep in in a freezer or something so need a heck of a lot of space? What is actuallt wrong with tinned/packed meat?

My dogs never want to eat dried dog food - never have done. Got my rescue in Dec and they (Dogs Trust) give you a bag of Arden Grange to feed them and mine really was not keen at all on that - and she eats anything!! It seems to have suddenly got more complicated to feed dogs!!

The Prize Choice and Natural Instinct packs/tubs in particular are really easy to store in a freezer. It's just got better stuff in it than tinned food but things like Nature Diet or the Wainwrights trays are good and can be stored at ambient temperatures.
I don't find it complicated at all, I quite enjoy feeding it to be honest, throwing some dry in a bowl for the older dog now seems a bit boring!

If the OP's dog though is not liking this new food she's got is it wrth her perservering? Most dogs generally are quite greedy in the main so if they turn their noses up then would you keep trying to feed it?

I'm trying the Naturalise stuff and mixer with mine at the moment - she seems to love it (the whimpering for dinner gives it away! Lol). Mind you, i am pretty sure she'd love a bowl full of cheese!

Well the advice has been given to re-offer the food later and the OP has already spoken about wanting to feed raw so advice has been given about that too :)

Yeah I can see that and that's good advice - how long should the OP try persisting with the food though? Obviously some dogs are fussy and any change for some they don't like but if you're introducing a new food type, whatever it may be, how long would you suggest the 'trial time' is if initially the dog sort of turned its nose up?

Well I can speak from experience having a very fussy pup on Orijen, she also was fussy about fish4dogs. We just kept persisting until it was all gone, Orijen is very expensive and top food. So the pup missed an occasional meal but continued to thrive so there you have your answer they will not starve themselves.

Thanks all, yep i will try again in the morning. Ive only changed to this food as a short term until i get my head around raw. I just could not keep him on pedigree. Interestingly he will eat the orijen as a reward/treat so I will perserve.

I would try only a few small amount in the bowl, sometimes putting 2 much in in 1 go can see them turn their nose up, so always start of with a measly amount then top up as it's eaten, never start with a full bowl (or the full portion) you are feeding in one meal.
To answer the (how long) if I personally am offering up a top quality food I will carry on for aslong as it takes, inc cutting down meals, so if a rescue pup or adult comes in and it's been on four meals a day, then I offer up food and they show no interest, I lift it and offer up 1 meal a day till they get the idea that they cannot wait for the next installment, cos it ain't coming:D as there appetite picks up or literally they know the food vanished in 5 mins, I will offer up more as necessary. I would maybe add more flavour (tuna juice) veg oil etc.
Dogs need very little food they are designed to live on very little and they don't burn fuel as we do, hence the reason we suffer energy slumps/fatigue (if we don't eat) and we certainly can't run for miles on meager portions like they can.
I would need to see weight loss before I would give in with dog food.
Try and persist with him until your start on the raw, failing that sell the food on ebay, you should still get a good bit back on it.

I think from what ive read they can be fed raw with no worry just not cooked thats when they may soften and splinter. Im a newbie to this so possibly another member may know more x
