Just when things were going so well too....
Last night the hubby left the door ajar, and mummy cat stole another puppy
obviously her little cuckoo needed company, or mummy cat now thinks she's a dog, or that puppies are kittens...who knows what goes one in her mind
When I got in and noticed (obviously hubby can't count) I retrieved the puppy and returned it to its foster mum, much to mummy cats disgust. Late evening Mummy cat was so unsettled by this turn of events she decided to hide her brood, I found them, gave tiny puppy his formula and left them alone, I figured they were in a safe place, if I moved them and she didn't like it she'd only move them again.
This morning Mummy cat had moved the kittens and left a very cold, very upset tiny puppy behind.
I warmed him up and offered him back to her but she promptly picked him up and deposited him outside her bed.
Figuring that she'd done enough I brought him down and popped him on the heatpad (I'm so glad I went out and bought these things,) and made him up a formula, which he had a few drops off, before falling asleep. I did bum duties and kept him with me. He woke up about half an hour later and had some more formula and an almightly bright orange poop, which I managed to smear up my arm (way to go Penny!)
He then slept for another hour or so and woke up with an almighty appetite, so I can only assume that he well and truly wore himself out getting upset in the early hours. I took him through and foster mum was more than happy to give him a good clean and mother him, though being so tiny he got a little lost. The others had already finished feeding, so he had front row seats so to speak, and after a little encouragement and manouvering I latched him on and he fed for England! He was really pulling, pawing and going for it!
Two hours later and he was wanting to feed again, so off we went, I latched him on and he was pawing away, 90 to the dozen. I'm keeping a close eye on him but he seems quite adept at getting on top of the others, as I was worried about him getting squished, being so small.
He had his last feed about 10am and is now sleeping peacefully, with his brothers and sister, so far *touch wood* he seems ok. I'm back to getting up every two hours, it seems, but hopefully he'll be strong enough to latch himself on in a couple of days, it didn't take the other pup long to adjust, the vet thinks it's getting accustomed to a larger teat size.
Mummy cat is wandering around in a fowl mood, I'll be in for it later no doubt, as she can be a spiteful little cat, and is quite tempramental, which is why it was such a suprise that she took the puppy on in the first place. There's no doubt at all that if it wasn't for her tiny puppy wouldn't have made it, the vet is of the same opinion, so maybe she knew he was strong enough to manage without her now? Maybe she knew, now that her kitens are opening their eyes and starting to stagger around, that in a few more days the puppy would be a long way behind developmental wise, and decided it was the safest option, or maybe she was just paying me back for stealing the other one away from her, which is probably more like it!
So that's it so far....vibes and crossed fingers for tiny puppy please!
