My boy is almost 11 now and he sometimes gets a bit sore and stiff.

I want to get him a new dog bed for christmas and was looking at possibly getting him an orthopedic or memory foam bed as they are apparently better for their joints.

I've looked at some online and review seem to be mixed - I just wondered if anyone has any experience of them or any recommendations?

Not wanting to spend a fortune as he often choses to sleep in our bed rather than his own so I don't want to spend loads only for him not to lie on it!

Thnx

Mine seem to like the Back on Track bed but not sure if it does anything for their joints, they're both pretty mobile even the 10 yr old GSD bitch.

Personally, I think you can do more with good nutrition and supplements than beds, eg cod liver oil or Joint Aid. Plus we have lots of dog beds round the house and the dogs still chose to lie on the floor half the time (if there's no space on the sofa, that is.... :D )

Thanks - he's still very active but finds stairs difficult and has some tenderness around his back.

He has physio a few times a year plus is on glucosamine, joint oil and no bute so I was just looking for something else to help him.

I have a 13-y old GSD x whippet who sounds much like your dog - reluctant to do the stairs any more and moves around a bit trying to get comfortable. She is diagnosed as arthritic.

I did have some sort of veterinary bed which was quite good, but what she loves is what she has currently. It's simply two plump bog standard 'padding' mats placed side by side. On top of them is a very thick wool hook-rug I made myself. That actually gives her a height of 3-4 inches off the floor, with the bounce of the under-beds and the warmth and depth of the wool rug. It so happens that the bedding fits snugly between the side of a dresser and a chest in our Aga-warm kitchen. At night I often put a roll of blanket round the back for her to lean against. As I type she is snoring for England on it, and it's her favourite place (she's allowed on sofa, bed if she wants to). Question is, can you finish a hook-rug for Christmas. It took me over a year to make!!! Hope you find something to make her more comfy, but I think often home made ideas work just as well. Just give her that bounce...

Kurunda bed are excellent but a far cheaper and easier on elderly dogs option is to buy a cot mattress.
Decent ones can be bought new for under £25 and covers are easily found.
