I've started using orthotic innersoles on a daily basis after discovering from a podiatrist that I overpronate and that is likely to be the cause of my hip tightness. I've got several pairs of innersolves - full length ones which fit great in my trainers and a pair of 3/4 length ones which fit in my every day boots, but I haven't found any that are really suitable to use in my riding boots (Dublin Dressage boots and a pair of Sergio Grasso).

The full length ones are too wide and too thick - they make my feet too close to the top of the boots. The 3/4 length ones that I have can slip forward when I'm walking down hill or exercising, which is obviously not a problem when I wear them in my (non-riding) boots in the office! Does anyone have any suggestions of orthotics that fit well in riding boots and don't slip forward?

Another issue I have at present is the boots are fairly new and I'm currently wearing them with heel raisers, so I'm not even sure if I can wear any orthotics whilst I'm still using the heel raisers?

I don't really want to have to go back and see the podiatrist just to find a pair of innersoles that suit my boots (seems a waste of an appointment fee!), as I'm only wearing them a few hours each week.

I have to have insoles due to an accident with my left leg. I use Ariat boots with either the zip or the laces. They fit a treat. But for the sake of an appointment fee i'd take all my boots with me and get them to fit them all in one go.

how about ringing the podiatrist for a quick chat - they can either say :
-Oh yes thats fine you can get away with it when your riding
-I know excatly what you mean - i have this 'X' that will solve the problem
-Come see me, we need to fix this problem for you.

At least you know where you stand! 'Excuse the pun'

I overpronate too and have hypermobile joints but I dont use any insoles for riding just walking. How about them treads for stirrup irons which are angled, dont know the proper name sorry!

I have orthotics made for me I have flat feet and reduced joint spaces, they are 3/4 and really wide but I find boots that have removable insoles in already mean you get the extra height can't help with the sliping though as mine don't move they are really wedged in. I second the taking your boots to the podiatrist.

I use my orthotics in my riding boots. I have two sorts of orthotics, both 3/4. One set is really very chunky, but fits in yard boots and trainers. The other set, although the same shape are much less chunky. So whilst they aren't as good for everyday they fit in my work shoes and riding boots.

I won't ride without them now - saw a significant improvement in my lower leg position with them in :)

I am going to try the spray mount spray as the only problem I have is getting my foot into the boot without them slipping forward, although once they are in they don't move.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions - I might go back to the podiatrist if I can't find a working solution, but I don't really have time at the moment to make an appointment.

My friend also said her leg position improved once she started riding in her orthotics, which is why I'm interested in trying it. I use them when walking and have started to notice my hip flexors are not as tight, but I still have issues with my leg position when riding (I can get cramp in my hip) and I wondered whether the orthotics might help. I also figure that in tacking up etc, I'm busy walking around and would benefit from having them in then too.

I know what you mean about the getting your foot in without slipping - have that problem with all the 3/4 length ones I use.

The other method i've used for threequarter length in soles is to take out the shoe's inner sole and lay the 3/4 one on top and draw a line with a biro. Then cut the shoe's inner sole to make up the remaining 1/4. Stick them both in with spray mount after checking for fit.
I haven't used them for riding - might give it a go.:)

I never use my orthotics in my riding boots, only in yard boots & work shoes etc.

agreed. i dont think u want to walk a mile with ur long leather boots. i wouldnt do that myself. the longest distance i walked with my leather boots is from the car park to the stables. i get them off quickly after each ride.

what sergio model do u have? vicenza? i have two pairs of sergio grasso. one made of nappa and the other full grain leather. the nappa ones do drop after a period of time. the other pair doesn't change shape at all...

:)
