It's been a busy time for my little Irish pony, he came off the lorry looking very sorry for himself 2-3 weeks ago (I am losing track of days!).
So after turning up at 11pm he was put in a stable and started stuffing himself full of soaked hay to start putting a bit of life back in to him after his long journey. He was very itchy so the next day he was fully wormed and bathed in antimicrobial shampoo.
Since then it's been onwards and upwards
he's not put a hoof wrong and he learns very quickly, I had his teeth rasped a couple of days after he arrived and the chap who is very experienced recommended starting ridden work asap, so the following day he was put in the school for 10 mins. It was a scary moment as I'd bought him unseen, so I was hoping he wasn't a nutter! Luckily it turns out he's a saint and although he was doing his best giraffe impression, he was very very well behaved and managed an unbalanced walk, trot and canter on both reins.
He then had the vet out for health checks, jabs and wolf teeth removal- while we was sedated we made the most of the opportunity to smarten him up
he's good with being trimmed up, but sedation does make it easier in any case!
Over the next week he started accepting the contact and giraffe turned to smart pony
has made a start on lateral work now too and has got the hang of rein back.
(sorry for the quality of the pictures, they are from my mum's phone!)
He was introduced to jumping over a small log
He went straight in to the water no problem !
He's got a neat little jump on him
He went out on his first mini-hack round the block earlier in the week and to my surprise (considering he was from a very quiet area in Ireland) he didn't bat an eyelid at the traffic of haulage lorries in both directions. So yesterday he went on his first real hack up the bridlepath with my other buckskin Summer, was fine to go first or last, cantered and had a short gallop and popped some fallen branches!
He's been lunged a couple of times and has picked up the voice aids very well, clever little pony! He's a very chilled ride, never rushes or gets strong just takes everything in his stride and tries his hardest.
He seems to love learning and is filling out a bit more since he's been on some good food and grass.
