Did any one see the otter hounds on Breakfast telly?

What fantastic looking dogs. Apparently they are nearing extinction. Such a shame.

Have just read about this in the news paper. A lady in Hereford has bred her last litter of 3 pups. She says there is no demand for them. I saw a face shot of the 3 and they looked like real characters. Are they "domesticated" like a normal dog? Suppose they will be like beagles used for hunting and as pets. (Althought not otter hunting anymore)

If I didn't already have four dogs I'd be really tempted by one.

They said that although they are keen scent followers, they are also very affectionate and can live indoors. I think they probably aren't as difficult as a fox hound would be.

Trouble is, we live by a river...

the reason they are not more popular is because they absoloutely STINK

- I have judged a few classes of them and I alawys have to wash my hands afterwards - they have a very oily waterproof coat and have a very distinctive smell - really not suitable to share a house with I would have thought !

That's something I didn't know! They are stunning looking and I was very tempted by one in a rescue centre a few years ago. She had cherry eye and the owners wouldn't pay for an op so gave her up. Beautiful but that coat looks like a lot of work.

I can second that.

I had one years ago from Plymouth Dogs Home, lovely person, but wasn't suited to where I was at the time, he went to a lovely farm home on the moors and lived outside very happily.
