The little git has decided to become VERY aggressive with other dogs if,
-they have something he wants
-he is bigger than them.

So we have made the decision to have his balls off next week, in the hope it might help.

Having never had a dog castrated before any help would be greatly appreciated (plus he's my little woofer and I'm all mothering and worried already

) I know the Vet's will tell me all I need to know when we take him in, but you lot will keep me occupied until then

I'm guessing he will need to be on lead walks only until the stitches are out, but what after that? Can we go back to normal walks (bearing in mind Otto is VERY active when he runs around!) or does he need to be rested a bit longer to make sure it's all knitted together properly??

Anything I need to get to help him recover?

Anything else?

Can you tell I'm a neurotic puppyog owner

I felt very mean when I was booking his appointment and he was sitting on my knee happy as larry

He shouldn't be so bloody macho then!!

Use it or lose it says I... I'm a meanie

Henry was 'done' in mid-December last year, he was a cone-head when I first saw him just before Christmas (it put me off asking about him, thank God the kennel staff steered me his way

!) and by the time I picked him up on 3 Jan he was fine and dandy with no restrictions on what he could do at all. Hope that helps.

It does take thier hormones a little while to settle down - so watch out for him/ other dogs that meet him getting a bit confused to start off with.

A friend got a Boxer from rescue - he was 7 and neutered just before he took him on - my dog (entire male) found him a bit confusing for a while - because he prob didn't smell 'right' and the boxer to a while to realise he wasn't having his usual 'power' over other dogs.. Luckily mine is a wuss!

So I reckon it took a month or so before he calmed down and was fine.

Physically I think he was fine very quickly tho!

remember castration isn't always a magic cure - you may need to do a little re-training around other dogs too

We had our Springer done for the same reasons as you and also because he wanted to hump everything, including me, and was getting aggresive when I tried to stop him. Was the making of him, fantastic dog. We have however not had our cocker spaniel done and have never had of the above problems with him.

Otto does the humping too, however he will stop (usually before he really starts) if I tell him NO!

I'm not expecting miracles, but I wanted to rule out the biggest factors first, rather than wait for it to become learnt behaviour and wish we'd had them off 6 months sooner.

I had Bear done about a month ago.

He was very quiet the night after but then from the next day onwards he was totally normal. I kept him off the lead becasue that is what he is used to, but I restricted his contact with other dogs that I knew he would play too vigourously with.

He did lick at it a little but nothing to worry about so he didn't need to wear the collar.

I fed him a little bit of aloe vera as we have had great success with healing in the horses just to help everything knit together.

The vet told me that they can still be fertile for up to 3 months after having them done.

I felt terrible leaving him at the vets and know how you feel, but he was fine.

Poor Otto - you meanie

I had Toby done and I don't think he barely noticed - he was a bit sore for the first day possibly. It hadn't occurred to me that they leave the sac (which just sorts of shrivels up)!

I have found though (even four years later) that he must give off a smell like a bitch - some large entire dogs find him extremely interesting which makes Toby very cross and started growling at them which is very uncharacteristic for him and just for that reason (because its a real pain out shooting) I wouldn't have another dog done unless I thought it necessary.

Ah bless the poor wee man!

It's a very easy straight forward surgery, takes all of ten minutes! Slice, pop, stitch, job done pretty much!

Obviously he will feel a bit sore after and may be relunctant to pee but will come right soon enough.

You will just have to be extra nice to the wee man

Healing time very quick, stitches out after 10 days unless disovable. Probably only given pain relief to use if required.

Beau was done at 6months!

hehe didnt get a chance to learn anything as the little bu**er started humping things! gr!

Its like a week on lead only walks, like relatively short lead walks, then can progress to like extendable lead walks etc, and avoid dirt etc, then stitches come out about 2 weeks after the op (i think thats right) and then its a bit more freedom, but just dont want him tonking round everywhere and spliting etc

Hes a healthy puppy thought so wont have any probs
smile.gif

I hadn't planned to have him done, it's not something I think is necessary TBH, but he is sooooo possesive we want to make sure we have covered all possible reasons.

The way he is at the moment I wouldn't be able to work him anyway, because he would floor anything that was within a 5 mile radius of "his" birds

I definately have no intention of breeding from him, he has been an awkward so-and-so to train (his puppies would definately NOT be suitable as pets!) and now he is a possesive git, so it seems like the best option!

If he wasn't such a softy when it comes to people I think having his head off would be a better option

That's the problem, if you saw the speed Otto does EVERYTHING at you'd understand!
grin.gif
He literally is at standstill or 90mph, he doesn't do inbetween!

Yesterday my Mum said she doesn't think she has ever met such a busy spaniel!

At present Otto would probably beat Popple up rather than bonk her

They can still be lovers, Popple will just have to go elsewhere to be fertilized
grin.gif
I'm sure Otto will be comfortable with an open relationship

LOL! I shall pass it on. Popple sure has lots of suiters.
