Otto's First Day Beating!!

Well, what can I say, he was a bloody star!!

He was on his lead all day, mainly because I knew that if I let him off, I would worry that he would misbehave, he would pick up on it and as a result, would definately misbehave

However, he behaved beautifully, sat and waited for every drive to begin in complete silence, looked into cover at my request, sat quietly in the Beater's Wagon, watched birds fly over (in some cases from out under his nose!!) without straining and was just an all round good dog

After the last drive he was let off and I worked him through some cover, he was quartering perfectly, watching me, responding to the whistle and best of all... he flushed two pheasants and he STOPPED

So I am over the moon with him!

Perhaps it's time to hang up his working shoes, it's bound to be downhill from here otherwise

Oh, what a good boy! Leah is very impressed and sends her congratulations... but when I suggested she send him a bone for being so good, she was horrified at the thought of giving one up. Sorry Otto, your mum will have to give you one instead.

No need for her to worry, he's had Sardines on his dinner tonight and is now fast asleep, I don't think he could muster the energy to chew a bone if he wanted to

I don't think we are ready to leave the safety of my Daddy's watchful eyes just yet

It was amazing to watch him today, it was like someone had flicked on a switch and he just knew what he was supposed to do! He has never stopped to a flush before and never quartered like that before, it was just fab
