Myka was great to ride today. Soft, light, swinging. Then I decided to try her new bridle on after we had finished. (I need to treat it before I ride in it so I rode first then fitted it). She was near a wall but she's polite so I took that for granted and was in an unsafe position between her and the wall. She had a momentary 'f-off' moment seeing me raise my arms to bridle her again when she may have been in 'we are done now' frame of mind, and she swung round to move away, squishing me against the wall. She knows better than that but equally she was not tied up so I could not immdiately bring her nose towards me when she made to move off. And I also know better than to work in a cramped space with no escape route, when I could so easily have asked her to step across first giving me space around her.

I think I have cracked a rib but there are no red flags for xray so I guess I just guzzle pain killers and hope they are just bruised! Arghh what an idiot. And some manners in the stable work is on the list. Horses are unsafe enough as it is without taking them for granted and not using basic precautuions to keep them under control when you are working with them.

I'm so stubborn that once I got my breath back I went back in, moved her around via yielding shoulders and quarteres a few times, backed her out of my space then bridled her. She stood rock still and the bridle is lovely. So every cloud I guess...

Oh no! We all do things like that though, its only when it goes wrong we really think about it, I know I certainly have recently put myself in the very same position without even considering.

Hope its not too sore and improves quickly. How was the bridle!?

Totally agree, we've all done (and still do) things in not the safest way - I know I'm doing so when I catch myself thinking "I'll just quickly do xyz, please don't move", or similar. We get away with these things so often it leads to a more relaxed approach I guess, even though we know better.

Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Ouchie! I swear doing stuff on the ground can be more dangerous than riding sometimes!

I once got concussed by an overexcited Fuzzball pratting about at liberty when he of zero respect for personal space literally headbutted me in the face (he used to fling his head around at trot a lot)

I also nearly got knocked over today inhand walking the baby pony. Two buses came past on the road literally a couple of seconds after we turned off onto a narrow bridleway with chest-shoulder height solid walls on either side.

He wasn’t that bothered (although was aware of them) but the horse behind (also inhand) was a bit upset and shot forwards without really having anywhere to go as was unable to get past so was kinda bouncing on the spot behind us. He obviously found this a bit unsettling and he also decided he wasn’t sure about the dog wearing a coat a bit further down the path so he spooked into me. Just about stayed upright and he did then stop so less harm done than your incident from the sounds of it!

I do stupid stuff all the time. I’m a little more careful with Fin but do dumb stuff all the time around Hermosa. God knows how no one died when she was 3/4. At 7, she expects it.

I managed to get run over by my new horse by… walking on front of her when leading her 🤦🏼‍♀️ after years of getting away with stupid stuff with Tali I just never thought.

It’s easy done and hope you have a very quick recovery AE.

Ouch!

Very easy to get hurt when you're not even doing anything stupid. I remember once sitting on the floor seeing stars when I had ducked under Little Madam's neck at the same time as she went to bite a fly on her shoulder.
I'm doing my best to stupid proof my two youngsters as it will definitely serve them (and me!) well in life.

I nearly got flattened by a cyclist yesterday as we were mosying up the lane because I was walking on the wrong side, as D prefers me to be in her left eye, not paying much attention 🫠

Years ago my mare ( who I’d owned from 15 months) went into the wrong stable when coming in from the field , so instead of getting a headcollar, I went in and got my hand on her nose to lead her out, she rushed out with me facing backwards and I fell down and dislocated my elbow, absolutely my own fault.

I did something very stupid on a viewing once 🫣

This was years ago before I had any horses, and the yard I rode at had vehemently taught us never to put our foot in the stirrup when mounting from the block, unless there was someone holding the other stirrup (an insurance issue, I suspect).

So I went to this viewing, and proceeded to do a leap of faith onto this horse, who neatly sidestepped when my leg was halfway on, so I got pulled off the block, and fell in a heap under this mildly confused horse, with one leg still on her side. It was one of those moments where you think “oh no, I’m falling, but this could take a while”. I scraped the skin off my entire back. The horse was very good about it all, though. My back was weeping for days so I had blood plasma shirt stains for weeks on my school shirts! Mild physical injury, but I was absolutely mortified, and henceforth always put my foot in the stirrup when mounting from the block 🤣.

Somehow, this lady let us continue the viewing, but I suspect she declined a second viewing politely by using “unexpected lameness” as a get-out-of-jail free card.

I brought both ponies into the yard together in headcollars for their equisal and mum put the slip rail up after us, none of which was something that happened very often. My idiot boy was spooked by the rail, shot forward and sideways, encouraged his mate likewise, I got sandwiched between them, lifted off my feet and unceremoniously dropped on my face a couple of yards later. Only one whack from a hoof, which I thought was a very good outcome considering. And I have EVA mats over the road planings, so it was quite a soft landing :o

Hope you recover soon. It is so easy to get hurt. I have a black finger at the moment from it being wrenched on a rope. Horses 😂🤣
