Hi all - guess I'm looking for sympathy and some advice... Came of my baby on Wed evening (haven't been able to move very well since!) and ended up being ambulanced off to A&E as I couldn't move my right leg and had some pretty impressive marks on my face (think I might need a new hat).

All this occured because Lu bronked. He has never picked up his back legs before and always been a really sweet boy. The only thing I can think of is that we had the saddler out and had just adjusted his saddle a little bit, and didn't have the numnah or sheepskin girth guard on - do you think this could have caused such a violent reaction?

He is a sensitive skinned lad, and when the saddler came before he was a little unsure of having a 'naked' saddle on his back. Do you think the saddler can do the fitting with a numnah underneath? Any suggestions?

No serious harm has been done to me - crutches for a few days and moderate concussion but I am keen to try and understand why this happened so I don't loose my nerve!!!

Thanks guys and a nice G&T for everyone who gets this far....

Concrete?! OUCH!!!

Mine was onto a surface designed and approved for RDA lessons - meant to be a very soft landing - I hate to think the damage I wouldn've done on another surface - I can only just move my legs and my face looks like I've been in a fight!!!

What caused your incident?

For such a violent reaction I would say there was something wrong with the saddle, a tack that was sticking out, or a lump somewhere in it that was sticking in him.

He may be reacting to the naked saddle but to be honest i would say the reaction was very extreme. a saddler can fit quite easily to a thin numnah- in fact they need to fit it to what every type of numnah you are planning on riding him in.

Thank goodness it's nothing to serious for you - good luck with getting back on.

Thanks - the saddler has said not to get back on until he's come and checked him again - bless even offered to get on if I couldn't (as it may be a few weeks until I can).

I am inclinded to think it was the saddle too - I know Lu and he's not a 'I'm going to bronk' kinda horse, and was visibly upset when I was on the floor and wouldn't be led away.

I'd be interested in ideas of causes. I've come off my 4yr old twice in the last month and that was through broncking. Both times he shied violently and then went into full blown broncks but he has never before so much as bucked!

Riverboy - I hope your not too sore x

My boy is very sensitive and the saddler has to fit hes saddle with a saddle cloth, if i put a saddle on hes bare back i would get bronced off too.

Also, when i had my boys saddles flocked, because he wasnt used to the fill of it, he went around completley arched. It turned out he had a sore back too, maybe get that checked? x

Thanks - oddly I had both my horses backs checked on Monday - she found slight tightness but nothing untoward with Lucas and he'd had two days off to let that settle before the saddler came.

I think the saddle may have pinched but also in the future he needs the cloth on. Charlie55 its nice to know mine isnt the only one whose very sensitive!

ahh yes the killer fly - Lu kicks out at flies when ridden (which at his size occasionally feels a little alarming) and has to have a cover on his girth otherwise he gets upset with the girthing process... and only likes certain grooming brushes too...

Oh why did i get a sesnsitive ginger TB....
