Has anyone had experience of this? It happened 2 days ago so is of course still going to be painful, but how long does it go on being painful in 45 year old women? How long will I be unable to ride the now wonky donkey that caused this to happen?

What happened? Well, picture the scene. Beautiful spring-like day, perfect for a hack with a friend. Tried out a new route. Crossed a lane, followed the off-road path up a steep bank, my TB mare spooked at a pipe she saw and jumped the 2 or 3' off the bank back down onto the road, loss of traction, she did a Bambi impression (I was still on at this point !), at some point she thought I pressed the 'eject' button and I landed on the road on my shoulder, at which point my friend got off her horse to help, mine spooked again so did hers and they both ******ed off, galloping up the lane and across a busy road all the way home. Meanwhile my friend and I trudge home with our war wounds. After the adrenalin wore off I went to A&E to find out I have rupture my right acromioclavicular joint and damaged the cartilage.

Horse is now a wonky donkey with a massive Haematoma the size of a baby's head on her stifle and cuts and bruises all up and down her legs *owner/rider secretly mutters about sympathy rating of zero*

I've been told I'll be off games for at least a couple of months. How did it work out for you if you have experience of this?

I did mine 6 years ago, horse decided to leap off bank I was expecting to walk down.

It worked again fine within about a month but will always look wonky and can still be uncomfortable, although a good osteopath works wonders.

Good luck!

I did mine 2 years ago falling off whilst jumping. Blinking painful!

I was told by the doctor that it would have been a quicker recover time if I had broken my collar bone rather than separate the ac joint. Mine was a grade 3 where the top and bottom ligaments were torn, I was very lucky that even with that damage I didn't require surgery.

I was unable to ride for 2 months as I wasnt able to pull back or hold my arm in a given position for any period of time. I had physio for a while and I was told I made quite a quick recovery for my type of injury as I was determined to get the mobility back quickly. I did my exercises that I was given and always took them that little further.

It took 1 month before I could raise my hand above my head and after that recovery started to get quicker. I still have my lump sticking out on my shoulder so he is now named Chip. He also reminds me when it's cold with a little grumble.

Mine was quite severe as it was a grade 3, check out other sport forums such as cycling as this injury has been well documented with them.

I separated my shoulder and had a subluxation (partial dislocation) of my collar bone last year. I was riding 2 days afterwards but would have to get someone to tak and untack as I couldn't lift my arm!

It took about 3 months to heal properly but I would advise a chiropractor who use laser an other stuff to make sure I had full mobility in the joint.

Hope you feel better soon :)

I've not done that particularly, but have had three shoulder ops and various problems over the last ten years. All I can say is rest as much as you are told - don't rush it, and do the physio etc. Also, don't ride until you have a lot of your strength back in your shoulder. Your horse will only learn to lean on your weak side! Mine does shoulder in everywhere as she got to know it was the easiest way to win arguements. I have had a crooked horse, saddle and probably own back as a consequence!

I've done this mildy having been bucked off 3 weeks ago. Thought I was ok (sore only in certain directions now) and rode for the first time since this morning, but tonight I'm in agony - the horse I rode doesn't even really pull!
