Talking to new Spanish trainer (who I like a lot actually and feel is very good) but is honest to the point of bluntness , said to me at one point in our discussion, people may try and take advantage of you because of your age (old).Ouch!!!

Oh yes. I have realised some people assume I must be a push over now I am ancient. Disconcerting when it first happens. We need to present a slightly tougher front than when we were younger I have found to make some people think again.

My great aunty Mabel is 91 and has always kept us all in check. The older generation in the family has always been very opinionated and outspoken so it would never occur to me that because of someones age (older) you could take advantage of them.

most horsey people I’ve met are very strong direct people too. It’s why I like them ?

Of course older people lose their brains at some point and don't understand the world as it is now. Not!! I recently advised a young man on a sign up for something stall that I found his patronizing and cooing manner offensive and just because I was using a mobility scooter did not make me mentally incompetent. I had a really good conversation with him after tying him in technological knots, he was seriously astonished that I was far in advance of his abilities! The outcome was we parted as friends and he said his impression of older people had changed dramatically. I hope he stuck to his new awareness!

I think once turn about 30 gets easier to be taken seriously than when younger. But possible wanes again once hit retirement. Whereas in reality you can be credible at any age.

I had an ouch moment too.
I'm driving a really nice looking truck at the moment.
I pulled in to put a break in at Ferry bridge services.
When I was making my way back to the wagon I noticed a bloke taking photos of it.
I waited to get back in while he took his pictures.
I went to get back in and the bloke said " are you driving it?"
When I said yes he went bless you and tried to give me a cuddle.
T#@7.

It is flipping annoying ….only it worked in my favour at new yard…originally my girls were in a paddock furthest away from yard….took 15 mins to walk down and bring up. Yard owner decided to switch paddocks so I was only half way down the track and she told the teenagers they had younger legs so the walk would be fine.

Hobbling in to the podiatrist this week I was invited to lie down on the couch. When I hopped up on to it easily I was commended on my "agility". It's not that long ago that I was clambering up onto a 17hh ID. It's all in the eye of the beholder I suppose!!

Well I have Indian relatives and they are very keen on respect for elders and they would think it entirely right that the younger ones did the most work.I think Spanish trainer has possibly been brought up the same way.

i have always suffered from this because i am only 5 ft and look young even now at 59yrs of age, but they quickly get their flames dowsed when i put them in their place………not something i like doing but respect is respect, everyone should be given it and it is only taken away when deserved by bad behaviour

I have a similar issue.

I'm small and I've found that even now at the age of 49 people still treat me like I'm a child (even one of my bosses ?).

It's infuriating to have people assume that you need looking after all the time and require everything to be mansplained to the nth degree.

My ouch moment was when I was automatically given the senior's discount at a large retail shop, but after a moments' thought I was actually delighted. There have to be some advantages to getting older........Although I recently had to inform a young gentleman who was in the process of attempting to rip me off that I wasn't, in fact, a complete idiot.
