Well anyone watching our foal cam will know we had a new arrival last night ...

Cassie proved very sneaky - coming in from the field with a very unfull udder and not looking like she was going to foal any time soon, and not having waxed up at all previously either.

'Luckily' my 2 year old daughter was sick about midnight so as I was up I glanced at the camera and couldn't work out if Cassie (the mare NOT in the foaling box(!) was foaling or not!

Turns out she was...

Textbook birth - Clever girl Cassie but it was a long night. Foalie arrived at just after 1am and still hadn't got up (and therefore hadn't suckled) within 2 and a half hours...cue talks with our very understanding vet who probably wasn't best pleased to be woken at 3.30am and anyway after a VERY long night at 5.30am he did finally get up to the milk bar.

He's still not the brightest - Although he has now sussed out how to find the milk once he is up he has been having trouble actually getting up - so for a while we were hauling him up every hour to get him feeding but he has actually got to his feet himself a few times now.

He's a very big boy - surprisingly so as neither mum nor dad are particularly big (15.2hh) and has been named Rodney as a stable name because he was such a plonker when it came to finding the milk bar and getting to his feet.

So after a long and worrying night it is good to see him looking so strong now, but I am absolutely knackered as 45 minutes sleep is just not enough for me!!

Rodney is not the handsomest - but he is a striking little fellah and I'm sure they'll be someone out there who loves a big blaze like that!!

Next up should be Lola who is currently under the watchful eye of the foal cam!

Ouch!

I know I found the foaling videos on yuo tube really interesting in the run up to our first one this year - to remind myself what it all entails - so thought others might be interested in seeing Cass's!

So pleased with our girl - she is such a good mum - makes it all look very easy!

Thank you so much for posting that! I opened the photos and fell in love with Rodney - he is adorable. The viedo was amazing - a lovely peaceful, natural birth. Clever mum!

Ah but isn't that a cremello or a perlino in your avatar - so you obviously like the double dilutes!! (very attractive horse BTW!)

Funny as I expected no-one would find her easy on the eye but we have had so many people say how lovely she is.

Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder!!

Aha! Is that why the yard was lit up and stalls were being mucked out about 4am!?
Being only midnight here I clicked on and thought "OMG, they start early!" I was just going to ask which mare it was, silly question, I'll just take myself off and watch the video now. By the way, I love the name Rodney (Rodders!) I hope he and his mum are doing well. Thanks for sharing the yard with us, I generally pop on a couple of times a day, I love being nosey, I was going to say " a fly on the wall' but knowing my luck I'd get squished!

LoL that is so funny!! No we're not that dedicated! Mum was getting very stressed by the surrounding horses so we had to play musical stables to giver her some privacy - of course if she'd given me some warning she could have had the HUGE foaling box to do it all in -nice and privately - well apart from people all over the worl watching of course!!

That was so moving to watch. Unfortunately I cannot seem to be able to view your web cam but thank you so much for sharing his arrival.

Brilliant name and a lovely looking foal......no wonder he took a while to figure out what to do with those ginormous legs
