Done the first show with our yearling yesterday.

He shocked the life outta me with his fantastic behavior, took it all in his stride and was a real credit to us. Easily one of the best behaved in the ring, shame he wasn't placed!!

It was more for the experience than anything else.

Here's the album of pictures lol if you're intrested:

What breeding is he - he has a lovely shine :-)

I have been lead to belive that yongstock should be turned out to type ie sports horses should be plaited natives not etc - it could be that if you had plaited you might have done better as he looks really nice? - if you want to do this again I would also get yourself some biege pants/ cords of ebay and wear short boots. Judges niggle on the smallest of things. If you turn out the best you can then the rest is up to him :-)

Keep taking him as it is all very good experiance

Just been researching, think we're going to do one at the start of July, Moss End, near Bracknell.

We don't want to over-do-it this year, being the first year. Plus my OH works most Sundays, so it's difficult fitting it around her schedule. grrrr.

Thanks ;) he is a 'Pura Raza Menorquina'
.

Well I have never seen one of those before ? had a little google images flick and think you are right to show him in his natural state. Are you doing foreign breeds youngstock or are there breed specific classes you can do ??

a bog standard local judge may not realise what they are looking at in a broad spectrum youngstock class, thats all I am thinking (I might get shot, although many will agree with me local judges can be prety poor at times )

aww hes a loverly little fella gonna make a good one :)x

I agree that you should try to find forgien bred classes, as by british breed standards his conformation is very different, but by his breed his a lovely example and its a same to loose out on the frillys just because the judge hasn't got a clue what they are looking at.
His always going to stand out in a crowd, sadly most people will not be able to appriciate him for what he is. Me included if I hadn't goggled his bred:D

Thank you, you're all lovely ;)

I thought we'd have some issues with the local judges and not knowing the breed; I am going to try some foreign breed classes in the future.

oh I see, you forgot our rosette LOL ;) ;)

Was thinking about ringing today to see if I could find out what the judge thought of our boy, any specific reasons why we weren't placed and what we could have done more. But looking on the staff list on the website, I'm not sure if the person who was judging works for the yard or not. Do you think we could get some feedback if I called up?

TBH, I am not sure anyone would know. I imagibe it was simply that she did not reconise the breed as he looks a little different to the usual TB,WB, native types that she would be used to seeing. I think you should find some classes that it for his breed ( I assume he is spanish??) and the judge might be better for you and your horse. I thought he was really smart.

Thanks Charlie.

We're going to try and find foreign breed classes where possible, but it's hard enough trying to find shows with youngstock classes, let alone foreign breeds :(
