Dear old girl was kicked 20 days ago.....fractured splint bone diagnosed on monday. The reason for delay in diagnosis is that she was becoming sounder. She had to be travelled and prodded and poked for scanning of her ovaries.

Basically since she was travelled (12 days post incident), she has got worse.

She is now reluctant to weight bear....looking jolly dejected and I'm concerned.

I spoke to senior vet this morning. I have to carry on with what i'm doing. Basically boxrest (not that she can move anyhow), cold hose twice a day. Stable bandage both front legs during this time. Bute twice daily. Adlib hay etc.

I have not seen the xrays, but will do when I get to the vets. Apparently its a midline fracture of splint bone with a small amount of displacemnet but nothing to worry about at this stage. It looks to be starting to calcify.

I am unfortunately watching her decline and want to know that I'm doing all I can.....vet did say that the healing process can be rather energetic in itself and be causing her pain.....oh god I'm so worried.!

I'm to carry on with what i'm doing and ring him again on monday :(

Sorry to hear about your mare. My husbands mare had a similar injury to a hind leg splint around 3 yrs ago. She had been slightly lame for 5 days and we had cold hosed and bandaged. Then she became unable to weight bare and at that point the vet said she thought there was infection in the bone and our mare must be PTS. I know this isnt what you want to hear but this is our experience of this sort of ijury.

Can yuo not get her re-xrayed at home? If your vets dont have a portable xray, get one who does? It's worrying its deteriorated after travelling-suggests there could be another injury worsened by the travelling?

I've had to of these :(

First was a totally shattered splint bone, which eventually required surgery to remove the fragments. He was fine after that.

The second was a chipped splint bone. Far less serious, but had an open hock wound so she was hospitalized and put on IV ab's. Healed fine.

Splint bones are fairly 'good' bones to break. It's the canons that are the problem.

I would recommend using a cold water hydrotherapy spa if u are able, especially if she's insured. They really speed up the healing process.

Good luck with her x

Could there be an infection got in? I only ask because my old TB got kicked and fractured his radius. He was on antibiotics, but the infection became too strong for them and he got osteomylitis. It was about three weeks after injury that his infection became apparent. He was treated with Baytril and made a full recovery, but it was touch and go for a while. I hope your mare gets better soon. x

Last year my horse had a fracture after being kicked. At first he was very very lame. Box rest, lots and lots of drugs, vet was out everyday at first.
After about 1.5 weeks he took a major turn for the worse and we thought we'd loose him. This happened several times. Each time he was given til the next day or that evening to show some response to pain killers.
It was a very scary up and down time. He's currently causing havoc and sound as can be. It became better VERY suddenly.
Just saying fractures and breaks are not plain sailing there are good days and horrific days but dont give up!
Big hugs- be strong xxx

Oh poor you and poor horse, I think you should phone them in the morning, ask again, sometimes you must trust your instincts and it may be that they need to increase her pain relief. Vets can be brilliant but they are human!

Had vet out as I was getting more concerned! Vet thinks infection.....but it hasn't spread as her temp is normal. Her leg however is very hot and swollen around the trauma site and above it around her knee. The vet has upped her dosage of bute to 2 in am and 1 in pm. Sh's prescribed oral antibiotics (tramesdiesan or something) but says if no improvement in a couple of days then she can change to a different one.

I'm trying all I can.....but both kids now ill as well to double the workload!

Wishing you and your mare (and your kids come to that) all the best. I've only known one with this type of fracture and he's still working, although intermittently lame if the ground is particularly hard.

Blimey...it all happens at once...glad you followed your instinct and got the vet, sorry to hear its an infection...hopefully wont be too traumatic for both of you.

Have faith...

The same thing happened to my boy last year, he was kicked in the field an also fractured his leg. After lots of box rest, and being spoilt rotten he has fully recovered. The vets also told me his legs will now be stronger than ever before.

I wish I had someone to tell me this when it happened to my horse because I always thought he wouldnt ever be the same.. so just have faith it takes along time.

I mixed glucosamine plus5000 into his feeds twice a day. This is supposed to help with bones.

Message me if you need anymore help as i know exactly what your going through.
