link to Jezebel (definitely the wrong name I'm afraid) who was ridden by CCj for the second time this evening.
I think it shows what a baby horse is like and can achieve with quiet riding.
She attempted a couple of mini bucks but nothing dire (after all she is half sister to jacques!

Lovely pics as ever HH. What is your method to get into canter for a youngster? I was discussing this with a friend recently, she had been advised to ask for faster and faster trot till it broke to canter but as the horse in question was a Welsh cob (ie bred to trot!

) I thought this was not likely to work and learning from the voice and correct aids would be better....what is your advice? Mounting in the pics also seemed to be when the mare was tied up - is that usual for you too? Thanks.

wow william looks amazing i remember seeing the pics of him when he was poorly. glad he's made a full recovery

Had a nosey at the rest of the pics- can I just say how lovely it is to see William looking so well! After everything you have been through with him, he looks fab now and well worth the fight! He has a stunning movement!

First the mounting, P is only leaning over her whilst she is tied up, he was standing on a box and jumping up then patting her on the opposite side and sliding back down. We wouldn't ever sit on anything tied up.
We try to jump up and down next to them so they aren't alarmed when you actually do, but the first mount is normally off a box so it's smooth and easy.
Or if it's out on a hack after leading them next to the other horse you just step onto the nearest bank and after leaning over with no reaction, step on and sit quietly. Strangely enough backing out on the road works far better than in the school, straight lines to follow and not too much cheekiness because they are a little worried about being out anyway. I wouldn't recommend anyone to do it however, we know whether it's safe or not. For instance Jacques got sent away, from day one of leaning over him he objected, so you would never get on a horse like him in the lane! He was backed in a round pen and sent smartly forwards into canter, as he bucked from the very start.
Jez understands the canter command from lungeing, but she cantered anyway, if you get the forward momentum going then ask normally on a corner, they just do it. CCJ has backed lots of youngsters now and she is pretty good at it. She doesn't do the same with them all, just sees what they feel they can cope with, and Jez is pretty laid back! She is the second Chocolate baby we have started here (the original one was sent away) and they have proved so easy.
They don't fuss or get stupid, just sort of ask what you require then try and oblige. Bit like him really

We aren't out of the woods yet, often the baby horses have a bucking phase a week or so after starting, I'll post if she does!

hornby, i taught my welsh cob to canter out on a hack up a hill behind another steady and experienced horse, he just copied the one in front!! worked for us!!
