I need to get some new feed for Lucy. I can't get her usual feed anymore.
She is a bit of a special needs case i admit but my local tackshop is driving me mad.
I live in the middle of nowhere and don't drive so i asked my OH if he could try to get Lucy some feed. I told him she needed some sort of showing and conditioning mix but as Lucy is a laminitic on steroids it needed to contain no more than 10% protine but she needs to put more weight on. He Rang the tackshop and explained the situation yesterday and all they said was to give her timothy haylidge and hifi light. So today he went into the shop and asked for balanced Horse feed showing mix which they didn't have. He then asked if they had a sutable alternative and they sugested hifi light and horsehage. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I've had problems with this tackshop before i spent 20 mins arguing with the assistant when i needed a slip head to make my bridle into a double bridle for showing and she could not understand why i couldn't have the one they had just because it was BLACK and had THE BUCKLES ON THE OUTSIDE. Why don't they employ people who know anything about horses and that can give you good advice. I've overheard some shocking advice being given out before and had to bite my toung very hard.
Anyway sorry rant over.

Haha - I completly understand! Its so frustrating isnt it. I went into the tack shop the other day to try out their body protectors for xc and tried there silk hats .. and I ended up fitting my own hat as well as trying on and fitting a body protector (which I didnt buy in the end) there was a sign on the wall too saying "hats and body protectors must be fitted by a member of staff and bought on the day" The girl tried sqweezing me into a kids body protector and told me it fitted when I couldnt breath, so in the end she left me to it and I tried on many and got one that fitted but I didnt like it in the end haha :)

LOL Gypsygirl glad it's not just me. I just don't know why they don't employ people who know about horses. Most of the staff are about 17 and they think they know it all. They where quite rude to my Oh even after he explained the situation several times. The trouble is there arn't many round here and i need to get this sorted. I might have to go in and give them a piece of my mind on sat  The other prob is they don't display the feeds so i can't look at the ticket to check the protine content. They just have a list with prices.

Its not the protein you want to be worried about for a laminitic, in fact they may need higher than normal amounts of protein. It is feeds with high sugar/starch contents which may trigger an attack and most show or conditioning feeds have high molasses which are high sugar. If you need to put weight on your best bet would be to increase fibre e.g speedibeet or alphabeet and if seriously underweight add some oil. You would be best talking to your vet.

I am feeding her on the vets advice. I have always watched Protine levels but yes also sugar and starch. I can't even look at the labels to see whats in the feeds when i go down there. I'm shore it shouldn't be this hard to buy feed for her.

Oh dear......can they not get you any winergy equilibrium condition - reasonable protien content and fibre and oil based, safe for laminitics too, also worth a look is badminton care and condition, surely they must be able to get these??? they are basic stock items???
