The vet came out today to take a blood sample as he suffers from a disorder where his red and white blood cells don't produce enough (or something like that) anyway, yesterday I noticed he hollers like he's lost his voice!!

I asked my vet if he thinks he's had a tie back but he said that if he had he should be able to feel scar tissue and it should have been disclosed when he was vetted. So mum phones the old owners who said that he hadn't had a tie back with them and they decided that they weren't going to persue the reason why he sounds like a strangled chicken when he whinnies!!

So my question to you lovely people is, have any of you experienced this before and can anyone shed some light?

many thanks

I wish mine would stop....I ride out and all he does is whinnie the whole time....walkers can hear him coming and he is known in the area already due to his high whinnie!! A cricket match stopped while I rode past due to him moaning...!!
never known it before...he is quite happy and enjoys going out....spose he just has alot to say!!

Its basically an operation which is used when the horses epiglottis (the flap in their throat which closes across the wind pipe when they are eating) either stops opening completely or can't open all the way. It will restrict the horses breathing so they quite literally tie it back.

One of my horses, my favourite Jet, cannot whinny properly. He is the biggest grunter and groaner and he snores, however he has had an injury at some point as he has a huge scar underneath his lower jaw inbetween his cheekbones.

His whinny is absolutely pathetic, bless him - I still like him.

Possible but highly doubtful. He was bred by a pretty rough cowboy who wouldn't pay for bute let alone surgery on any of his horses. The horse was just turned 3 years old when I bought him.

His scarring is criss-crossed under his jaw and certainly doesn't look like it has even been sutured and it is a mish-mash.
