Our new pony that we bought a couple of weeks ago had VERY overgrown hooves at one point in his life.

They were (so I was told) curled right up at one point.
I know little about this ponies past other than he has lived his most recent years at a riding stables giving children rides.

He is WONDERFUL under saddle and in all other ways, but I am worried about his feet.

He has no issues with being lame at all, butI am noticing that his hooves are appearing to grow out in an odd fashion.

He had just been trimmed when I got him and they looked fine. Now that they are growing in they seem to grow slightly pointing up (if that makes sense)

I am having the farrier out tomorrow to evaluate but would like input here.

Will corrective trims still change the shape of the hoof or has the damage been done from the past neglect and will this pony have to be on a high maintainance trim schedule?

Sounds like he has got a lot of flare, which will look worse before it gets better. Because as the correct new growth comes down more tightly, it will make the rest of the old flared hoof wall look more "scooped". We have a mare who was exactly the same but after 10 months has fabulous shaped feet now that the old flare has grown out fully.

Just be vigilant with foot care to avoid any white line disease and the like as the foot will be a little more susceptible at the moment because of the stress inside the foot caused by the flaring.

But don't worry, I'm positive the pony will be fine. Might be high maintenance trim schedule initially but bet it won't be too long before everything is sorted.

Agree with ISH_mad.

We had a rescue pony at the Riding Stables I worked at. His hooves had been very overgrown, and for the first 8-9 months of owning him, we had him trimmed every 3-4 weeks, but gradually as the new hoof grew down from the top, the flare got better and better. After 18 months his feet were back to normal, and he went 4-6 weeks before being shod.
