Since I posted a couple of weeks ago about about the confidence, bucking and leaping problems I have been having with my young horse (nearly 4 year old, 16hh ID x appy) we have had a few more ups and downs.
We have held fire on the hacking other than the 10minute hack down to my instructors yard and have just been concentrating on getting our confidence back in each other. Last week we hacked down to the school twice with my friend on her horse and he mostly behaved himself other than a couple of silly bucks on the way home. We encountered lorries, milk tankers, a bus and a cyclist and when he started backing off I actually put my leg on a pushed him forwards (which is a miracle for me as I am awful for snatching the reins, tensing up and generally panicing) and it actually worked he walked on and took it all in his stride
On Saturday we had a lesson and I asked my instructor if she could lunge him as I want to be able to lunge him if he is a bit fresh before we start going out hacking again, but I haven't lunged him since I'd got him (7 months ago) I wanted somebody with more experience to do it first. I thought he would act up, but other than looking abit confused to start with he was a little angel. I then carried on and had the rest of my lesson, we/I have got so much to work on (my position has completely gone to pot after 6 years of no lessons!).
I knew today that if I was going to ride we would have to hack down to the school completely on our own (no other horse or someone on foot) and I have paniced about it all day, cumulating in one big freak out panic attack just before I left work. But by some miracle I pulled myself together and jst decided to get on with it...and he was a good little boy and with lots of calming talking and encouragment (for the benefit of both of us) we got there and back with no incidents. Woohooo, was so happy and proud of us both
Still got a long way to go but this was a major hurdle for us as we have only hacked out once before totally on our own, and I fell off oopsy!
Sorry for the massive essay, just wanted to tell someone as I'm sure my boyfriend is absolutely bored to tears by my wittering.
