Since I posted a couple of weeks ago about about the confidence, bucking and leaping problems I have been having with my young horse (nearly 4 year old, 16hh ID x appy) we have had a few more ups and downs.

We have held fire on the hacking other than the 10minute hack down to my instructors yard and have just been concentrating on getting our confidence back in each other. Last week we hacked down to the school twice with my friend on her horse and he mostly behaved himself other than a couple of silly bucks on the way home. We encountered lorries, milk tankers, a bus and a cyclist and when he started backing off I actually put my leg on a pushed him forwards (which is a miracle for me as I am awful for snatching the reins, tensing up and generally panicing) and it actually worked he walked on and took it all in his stride :)

On Saturday we had a lesson and I asked my instructor if she could lunge him as I want to be able to lunge him if he is a bit fresh before we start going out hacking again, but I haven't lunged him since I'd got him (7 months ago) I wanted somebody with more experience to do it first. I thought he would act up, but other than looking abit confused to start with he was a little angel. I then carried on and had the rest of my lesson, we/I have got so much to work on (my position has completely gone to pot after 6 years of no lessons!).

I knew today that if I was going to ride we would have to hack down to the school completely on our own (no other horse or someone on foot) and I have paniced about it all day, cumulating in one big freak out panic attack just before I left work. But by some miracle I pulled myself together and jst decided to get on with it...and he was a good little boy and with lots of calming talking and encouragment (for the benefit of both of us) we got there and back with no incidents. Woohooo, was so happy and proud of us both:D Still got a long way to go but this was a major hurdle for us as we have only hacked out once before totally on our own, and I fell off oopsy!

Sorry for the massive essay, just wanted to tell someone as I'm sure my boyfriend is absolutely bored to tears by my wittering.
Thanks for reading :o

Congratulations :) I appreciate your struggle. I've not hacked my boy out alone yet, but our usual wednesday hacking partners aren't free tomorrow, and since I only have three opportunities to hack per week at the moment (work committments force schooling at ungodly hours the rest of the week) and he loves it, I don't want to miss out. He's not a baby, he's 9, and he's as bombproof a horse as I've ever had... but he's big (17hh IDxTB) and although I'm also a big unit, he doesn't have a terribly convincing halt at the moment and he's strong so I worry that if he decides that he's off, I won't be able to stop him! But I'm sure it's all my lack of confidence since we have squeezed past flatbed lorries, been passed out by a bunch of trials bikes, forded rivers, walked calmly past horses going insane in a field etc without so much as a blink. But that was all in company (even though the company's eyes were out on stalks!). My last horse had a serious problem with napping and it ended with a nasty accident on the road which has destroyed my confidence.

Anyways enough rambling this is your celebration thread, and well deserved! You've inspired me to suck it up and take my boy out tomorrow, thanks!

Aww good luck for today, my main advice would just be to take things at your own pace and do lots of talking!! I think Charlie horse was sick of the sound of me babbling on by the end of it.
I havnt got anybody to ride with for the rest of the week now so I think I'm going to have to be brave again eek. I don't think I can face a full proper hack just yet, think we'll just stick to riding down to the school for this week :)
I feel so annoyed with myself for losing all my confidence, as really especially for his age he is so good, but fingers crossed we'll be back on track soon!!

God luck anyway and you'll have to let me know how you get on :D
