Yet another group of gypsy horses have appeared near me. All as skinny as ever.

One is wearing a stable rug and is out 24/7 in a field with no shelter. Do i take it off? I was going to go and remove it tomorrow and leave a note. Am i right in thinking that although she's a skinny little baby, she's better off being naked than wearing a wet rug??

No, leave it on, somebody might consider you removing it constitutes an assault on their horse. Best just to leave things be and not interfere, however well intentioned. Had a girl on our yard for a while who did the same thing, honestly it's just not worth the potential hassle.

yup! Am sure even the 'wicking' kind of stable rug will prevent air from circulating round horse and drying them off. Even a light weight NZ can be worse than nothing if preventing the air from warming up between the body and outside.

Hate these people!

Sorry - yes I wasn't thinking about the implications, just the facts of wearing one. Would I take one off on a horse near me? Probably not as my own horses are vulnerable should anyone decide I was interfering.

A damn shame but I have to consider the implications. The horses in the field next to mine for example wear their rugs 24/7 without them being removed and checked and I've often thought about taking them off but the reprisals worry me more.

If I was really worried i.e if a strap was digging in etc then I would take one off and leave it over a fence but so far that hasn't happened.

You could leave it in the field as if it had accidently come off I suppose...

I'm sorry but I must take issue with that statement. It's an attitude like that that has lead to the atrocity in Amersham.
People turning a blind eye because it's too much hassle to get involved.

Phone the relevant charities, demand some-one comes out. I know they are overloaded at the present but DON'T turn your back

Do you think they'd bother to come out?? I've had murder with them before now, and can't see them thinking this is worth the journey.

I'm not going to turn my back - never have!

Just wasnt sure whether or not to do it myself and leave a note/not leave a note/throw the rug on the floor/hang it on the fence (barbed wire), etc??

Makes you wonder what the rug is hiding..............maybe it was stolen from a stable or has freezemark which they want to hide, or is so low in body condition, they don't want it on view.

REPORT IT.

what a tricky situation, is the rug like saturated? that really can't be good for the poor thing. am i right in thinking that it'll cause bad rubs to if its soaked?

hav u had to call the rspca or whatever before?

hang on, before you remove it, some stable rugs can be waterproof - my rhino is and i had my horse out in it all last year and he stayed bone dry.

what you could do, is ring the local press and see if you could connect it to the asherham case so the horses get help quickly?

Report any concerns to ILPH and thier regional inspector can investigate, or you County BHS Welfare representative.
Don;t go and remove any rugs-as already mentioned
and you might get kicked too!

I know you don't have a lot of faith in the authorities after your previous experiences, but if any good can come out of the Amersham case, it is hopefully that the RSPCA etc will act a bit sooner. I would definitely report it, good luck!

Thank you everyone!

Took a de-tour on the way to the yard this morning and passed their field. One of the horses had her rug around her neck, so i got out and fixed it. She is fully clipped (obviously a trotter) and very 'slim'...or in the words of the various inspectors..."I've seen worse".

That's what they'll say to me this time too.

All 5 of the horses are significantly underweight. As for the horse with the stable rug on, it was wet, but not wet through, so i left it on. They were all such little sweethearts - it's heartbreaking, it really is.

Sis finishes work at 2pm, so we'll go up later and get some pics. Then we'll report them tomorrow. Which usless organisation should i try first??

Could you try leaving a note on their gate? Just pointing out that a stable rug isnt ideal for outdoor use? But say it in a super-nice way!

There was a horse who used to be near me who wore a stable rug when turned out all day. Was quite odd...! I leave a stable rug on my shetland when she's out in the yard during the day but only if Im around to take it off it began to rain!
