When I went to see my horses this morning my big girl was not at all acting like herself. She was very jumpy, jittery and cautious which she never is. She was cowering at the back of her stable and stood up very stiff when I was grooming her and she went mental when I tried to put her bridle on (I ended up not riding her because there was something wrong) She also sniffed her food before eating it which she never ever does. Her eyes were very wide and fiery looking. She just wasn't herself and it was very scary. Any ideas what's up with her or what could have cause this strange behaviour?? She just had her back and teeth checked so it's not that. My Mum's friend suggested a poison that makes the horses jittery but I'm not too sure about that :(

Sounds like she may have had a fright from something, was there any mention of a fight in the field? Or like another poster has mentioned someone frightening her? Poor lamb, hope she is herself in the morning x

Could something have been in her stable to frighten her? a rat maybe?

My two were stupid coming in last night in the dark - wouldn't go near the gate (normally they are waiting for me) when eventually I got them through I heard what the problem was - our 200kg gloucester old spot boar had let himself out and gone for a wonder over to see them!!!

It does sound as though she has been badly frightened. How is she now?

When I went down a few hours ago she was a bit better but still very shaky and cautious, she usually doesn't scare at anything but today everything scared her! She has been in her stable during storms and blizzards and she has been completely fine which just makes the whole situation all the stranger!!

Like another poster said, bet it was a rat. If she is on straw then check any banks and corners.. and be prepared to run!

Ewww!! She is on shavings with mats. I found a vole in her water bucket before and she wasn't scared that time, and it would have had to climb up the sides of the stables to get in the water bucket as it's one of those big managers that go on the wall

Is there anyone living on site, could you ask them about nearby fireworks other things out of the ordinary? How are other horses on the yard? If it's just her more likely something in her stable - rats, barn owl, branch falling on her roof, etc that spooked her badly.

Hopefully it's a one off and she'll forget about it and settle back to normal.

Have you changed anything? I once moved my horses water bucket to the opposite side of the stable to let the rubber mat dry out and he nearly had heart failure about it :p

No, there usually isn't fireworks there but she is fine with fireworks, thunder etc. All the other horses seemed fine so I hope it was just something in her stable and that she will be back to normal tomorrow because it was upsetting me with the way she was behaving as she seemed so scared and unhappy :(
