Just a quick question for everyone here - would you consider feeding your horse out of date feed? If so, how out of date is too out of date? Weeks? Months? A year?

I've just realized that a few bags of our feed are OOD, trying to decide whether I should reduce the price and sell them anyway, or throw them out. The last manager was selling on OOD stuff cheaply, but I'm terrified that I'll sell it to somebody and their horse will colic or something. I'm sure that everyone on here will have some strong opinions on the matter, so I'm putting it to a vote. :)

I would buy it and feed it as long as it has been kept dry and doesn't show any sign to have gone off or moldy. If it's pony nuts, I wouldn't mind at all, for supplements I would be wary of feeding stuff too old as might not be efficient any more (but would consider price vs. how old it actually is depending what sort of supplement it is).

I do believe forage based feeds do not ''go off'' unless they have been allowed to get damp etc letting mould grow or something.
Its just that that the vits and mins can loose their goodness, so the levels wont be as high. Its like with human food, if it still looks and smells good then it should be fine to feed but it may not be as high in vits and mins.
Thats what they told me at feed store anyway, they had some out of date mollichaff calmer for 50p a bag and my tb was box resting at the time. I ended up giving him it buy the bucketfull as another forage choice and he loved it :)

I think you'll find that it is the vitamins that are "out of date" in that they may not still be active. The food itself is not "out of date" because there is nothing in it that is not routinely stored for months or even years before use, like wheat, oats, etc.
