I find it interesting how when people are asking about the prices of horses on here the opinions vary so much. There are the inevitable cries of over priced whilst others feel it is fair. So I just wondered what different people value in a horse and what is worth more or less to them when buying or valuing a horse?

Also do you think it is easier to be subjective about an anonymous horse rather than our own hence the often dismissive replies on value.

A horse is only worth what someone pays for it!

It depends on what you want - I sold a 14hh irish pony this summer for £4750 unseen to a lady in Scotland. She paid the full asking price as he was safe (she saw videos of my 8 year old god daughter hunting him in a snaffle at full gallop etc) sound and well schooled. I was expecting him not to sell, however she saw the picture, fell in love and that was that. They are now doing really well, he is a bit of a trophy hunter and she got exactly what she paid for.

I wont tell you how much I paid for him, but I never pay over £1200 for a horse, and he wasnt near to that!

Similarly, if a horse has a good competition record, it will be worth more money.

For me, it all depends on proven ability - I would never pay £25,000 on an un-proven horse, breeding or otherwise, however some do, however if I had the cash, I would pay that sort for something with proven ability to go out and compete on.

I think people feel horses are over priced when something unproven has a 10k price tag....and doesnt have the proven goods to justify it.

i couldnt afford to spend more than 2000 on a horse really, especially in this current time...... however some people think a standard usual hack (which is what i would look for to bring on) is worth 5000 or whatever

in my opinion alot of people kid themselves on the prices they expect their horses to sell for...... but on the other hand if you want an amazing horses who is always in the ribbons superb breeding amazing temperment u have to be willing to cough up.

I think one factor is the area that you live in - horses seem to be more expensive in the South East for example, so a poster in that area might price horses more highly than someone from a different area.

Also your own realm of experience has an influence as well. Someone who does top class eventing might wonder why a scruffy but safe pony who can only jump up to about 2'6" goes for a considerable sum!

Personally, the things that I value would be temperament, safety, good conformation and movement and some proven competition record.

A horse is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I have had many arguments with people over how much my pony is worth. She is a 13.2hh chestnut unreg welsh mare. My old dressage teacher said she was worthless as she isn't any good at dressage and will sometimes just stand in the middle of the arena and refuse to move! (But on a good day she will get placed) She also does local showing, she can jump incredably well, She does competetive endurance rides of up to and including 80km and hunts every week sometimes twice a week often leading a 5yr old child on her pony she also whips in will go first or last. She is handled and ridden off the leadrein by the 5yr old child. So how much is she worth? It realy depends who i was selling her to. But i would have to be offered atleast £3000000 and then i would prob still say no!

My best horse cost me 1/10 of the last horse i brought and my first horse was virtually free.

Each one was brilliant for what i want to do with them at the time. I just wish I knew what I know now when I brought the first one!

And sometimes its a feeling you get when you see and try them - I just clicked with my "best horse" and you should have seen his old owners face as I was trying him out - she nearly didn't sell him to me but she was soooooooo scared of him - thats why we got him at the price he was.

I think it depends largely on what people personally like.dislike but the biggest factor is local variations in price. Here in Cornwall, prices are generally much lower due to the lack of money down here.
