I need a light inside and outside my field shelter but haven't got access to any electricity.

Is it possible to run a couple of decent lights off a leisure battery or rechargeable battery of some sort?

Can you buy kits for such things?

I've got a few torches hanging up here and there but that's not really safe for the field shelter as the ponies can reach them, and the torches don't last 5mins outside.

I hate not being able to see!

Depends on how secure from thieves your shelter is
I would not spend lots of money if equipment might 'walk'
Car Batteries are a danger to horses
Solar lights possible outside (possibly not powerful enough) like those used along driveways some can be wall mounted to put out of horses reach and maybe a battery wall light inside
I use head torches--hands free and shines where you are looking.

You can buy12v lights that already have the crocodile clips fitted to the cable ready to run off a car/leisure battery, they are not bright but enough to see what you are doing. You can get them from caravan accessory shops, there may even be one in the Argos catalogue now.

my husband has just bought me a 'suitcase generator'. you can carry it in and out of car and it's petrol run. Light s up my field shelter and stable as good as electricity and a bit outside.

Heartily recommend. Don't know how much it cost but think he got it from ebay

Hi, if you go to www.stockshop.co.uk

They have a superb solar kit on page 122 of their catalogue that will give you light in your field shelter, plus in summer, keep a battery charged for an electric fencer!! They dont supply direct to the public, but your local dealer can order from them for you..

I bought a Solar Shed Light from http://www.northerntooluk.com/

This was recommended on another forum however I think I chose the wrong option, as although the Solar Shed Light item no 1038E – with 6 LED bulbs gives out enough light to poo pick, it is just not bright enough …. However it looks after itself and needs no electricity just SUN … don’t we all!

I think it may be worth a call to them to ask them about the Solar Shed Light item no 336614E as I understand that this gives out more light.

Good Luck!

I have solar lights inside my field shelter. They are not all that bright but good enough to feed/change rugs. My shelter is 22 feet long and I have one at each end.

Thanks all

Will have a look on all those sites.

My shelter isn't secure which is why I didn't want to go down the route of getting a generator

Just get a compact light unit which contains it's own batteries and screws to the side of the stable. You can get them from the small independent electric/lighting shops.

They have two small parallel fluorescent tubes in them which are powered by 6 of those nice round torch type batteries.
