I've got two whippets with delicate digestions and, although they are house-trained and get let out several times a day into the garden and have two long walks per day, they still poo on the floor at night on a regular basis. They never ask to be let out by barking etc so I don't know how to stop it happening.

Last night was a real disaster, because our Roomba (robot vacuum cleaner) drove through the poo and smeared it everywhere. This morning OH said he wants to keep the dogs outside at night. So that's why I am looking for advice on nice outdoor kennels and runs please.

There is a lot of choice on the internet but if anyone has any personal recommendations, please will you PM me? I will also need advice on heating etc because my dogs only have thin coats and I want them to be nice and cosy in their new night-time house

With whippeys you should be fine with a flatpack run, and the companies usually supply a roof and kennel box too. I wouldn't recommend them for a larger breed because my female managed to bounce bounce bounce against ours so much that she broke the mesh away from the supports and I had to put it back together with cable ties

I would rug them at night also, being a very thin skinned breed.

Is there an area in the house that is flagged/lino etc where they could stay overnight? Or what about a dog flap? I'm not a big dog mollycoddler but they are quite a thin-skinned breed to be living out at night.

Thank you CaveCanem. I know it's not ideal to have them outside at night but OH is concerned about the kitchen hygiene aspect because I have lowered immunity due to medication which I have to remain on for life, unfortunately.

We do have a tiled utility room but we have our 3 rescue cats in there and they don't like being in with the dogs. They will have their kennel coats on when they are outside and they also have thicker rugs for really cold weather. The run will have electricity so they will also have a heater and heated beds so they don't get cold.

I am feeling guilty about sending them outside but OH is getting to the end of his tether now because he has to clean up so much poo. We also have an elderly cat who contributes to the problems

Sorry, I forgot to say that we have a cat flap in the utility but it's not possible to have one put in the French windows for the dogs as it would make the door insecure

Hi if you are not to keen putting them out in a kennel at night have you tried caging them in the house over night. I had a dog that poos at night the vet recommended crating her as the vet said they will not dirty in there bedding aria and it has worked.

Thanks animallover - I have tried a crate but the problem still continued. I just ended up with a smelly dog to wash every few nights. If they could learn to bark when they needed to go out it would be the answer to everything but neither of them ever really bark for any reason.

we did breeze block kennels with plastic strip doors on stable mats on slatted wood with IAE metal fronts and they are wonderful and no rotting or chewing

Thanks mon. I'm going to have a chat with OH when he gets home tonight because I want to have some input into what these kennels look like! I think breeze blocks sound good - not much chance of chewing those.
