Outgrowing horse's abilty - experiences

Hi guys

I'm looking for people's experiences of changing horses because they have outgrown their ability. I seem to find plenty of bad experiences, but few good ones - I'm hoping they must be out there!

I'm potentially thinking of changing but having a 'transition period' with both horses for a while...

do you mean that the riders have outgrown the horses ability?
if so then yes, a good friend of mine sold her old welsh D x tb last year because he just didnt enjoy jumping anything over 2"3, and my friend had had him for 5 years and done all the local comps with him but wanted to do more.
so she sold him on to a good home and got another one which has woked out great for her. she loves her new one and has been out doing more with him.
as an added bonus, her ex horse had to be sold on due to medical problems with his owners, and hes now back at our yard! so she has the best of both situations really =)

i'm in this situation at the moment, can anyone suggest what they think is the solution (if there is one!)

ive got my old boy, 21yo forester who ive known since an 8yo. i love him to bits but he now can only hack out quietly (he doesn't think so, still tries to bugger off as soon as his hooves touch a patch of grass, but still)

then i've got a 21 month old filly that i've had since weaning

then i've got a tb x id mare who is a bit quirky but jumps anything and can school beautifully when shes in the mood (but she is out on full loan to a fairly close friend since i got pregnant last year)

trouble is, im really really missing doing more riding! what i really want is to be able to do schooling and maybe have some lessons at home (i'd love to rebuild my confidence jumping but dont know if this will ever be possible) and get out and about a little this summer.

so these are the solutions ive thought of:

a) keep old boy, sell youngster and use proceeds and save up to buy something else (but this means probably waiting a year until i can afford to buy)

b) keep old boy, sell youngster and ask for my mare back off loan (risking upsetting my friend)

c) be happy with what i have (i feel so guilty as im lucky 2 be able 2 have horses at all, and feel so selfish that it doesnt seem to be enough )
