My mare has started getting terribly aggressive around her back end during the 3-4 days of her seasons this year, then is completely normal the rest of the time. The vet suspects ovarian cysts and is coming out to do a blood test this week to confirm it, I then have to wait another week for the results to come back, but if it's confirmed the outlook doesn't look good as she has other issues which make an operation not a good idea.

Has anyone else experienced these and if it comes back negative what else could it be?
She has never been like this before in her whole life (i've owned her form 10 months) and in previous years you'd barely know she was in season bar her being a bit dopey and showy with geldings. The only possible warning was last february (2008)she was very grumpy for her first seaon of the year, but then went on to be fine all summer.

Toffee is VERY moody at the moment! I don't have any experience of ovarian cysts but I do have a mare who suffers when in season.

When I first got her (about 5/6 years ago) I tried various things to try and help her behaviour/moods, even colic when it was really bad. I started off with the "moody mare" supplemets, which didn't really help, then spoke to the vet about trying Regumate. We tried this for a while, but this also didn't help, so the next stage was to get her ovaries scanned. This showed that on each ovary, she had many many more folciles than normal, which meant when she is coming into season, the pain is much much worse. She now has 'bute when she is in season and I try and cut down her work/dodge her teeth/feet and put up with her behaviour! The 'bute has stopped her colicing with the pain (well it was colic symptoms which were probably just a reaction to the pain) and it does seem to help, but short of removing her ovaires (at 19 it's not happening!) I just have to deal with her.
She usually settles down but it's a good month or so in spring she is like this.

Hope that helps.

A friends mare had ovarian cysts and had a successful operation to remove a football size cyst. She had been showing stallion like behaviour, i.e. mounting mares, aggresive etc. After the op she is now fine.

Have you tried Coligone - it is my magic treatment for most ill's, works on chestnut attitude in pain where bute has failed!

It will be interesting to see what the bloods say. Fingers and toes crosses.

That was my horse that Llwyncwn was talking about. (Hello, Llwyncwn!) It was a granulosa - a benign tumour. It was on her ovary & because it was so big, her other ovary had shrivelled up & stopped working. She was a complete pain in the ar*e to handle, biting, kicking etc (like a stallion), but after the surgery once her hormones had sorted themselves out & her remaining ovary had started working again, she was fine. In fact, she was too fine - lost her aggression jumping so I sold her as a happy hacker!

yup - we had one at work too - really stallion like and boulshy- brought all the mares in season as soon as they saw her. was stubborn as a mule to ride and generally a pain in the a*se! Had he operated on and havent looked back, turned into a fab chilled little mare!

My mare went into leahurst in November for a scan of her ovaries and biopsy's to be take of her womb etc. She had really irregular seasons, she was very moody, uncontrollable when ridden, would try and run you into walls and would spook at everything, her bed would be really messy compared to usual so you knew she would be in season and just wasn't a happy pony. Vets said her problem is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
When she went into leahurst they did the scan and her ovaries didn't have cysts however she did have an inflammed lining of the uterus, i biopsy was taken and a catheta (sp?) was put in, into which i had to inject some really powerful antibiotics into twice a day for 3 days and after about 1 month she calmed down, her seasons which were previously all year round stopped and then recently she had her first spring season and she was still a pleasure to ride, you can't even tell if she is/isn't by looking at her bed and she is nowhere near as narky.

Not cysts i know but it was a possibility and i hope your mare doesn't have them!! fingers and toes crossed and let us know how you get on

Well, the vet came today (this time my vet, not the one who mentioned the blood test). And he had a good feel about, he's not convinced a blood test proves anything so said not worth it for now. He couldn't feel anything major so has suggested a 10 day regumate course to try and settle things down. Depending on how this goes she may need to go for further tests/scans or stay on regumate permenantly.

Or a granulosa thecal cell tumour? The mare you talk about sounds like a GTC mare.

Thats what my vet mentioned today (different one from the one who said about a blood test).

After a good feel about he couldn't feel anything obvious so has suggested a 10 day regumate course to try and settle things down.
