Ovarian tumours - any one had experience

My little mare has been diagnosed with an ovarian tumour. We are just waiting for a couple of test results to come back before we are refered to the RVC at Potters Bar for possible surgery.

I was wondering if anyone else has had experiences of this and if anyone could tell me what is involved with the procedure etc.
 

Yes I have!

The mare in question had very stallion like tendency's and this is what caused us to investigate! Hers was about the size of a Rugby ball!
She went down to Rossdales, Newmarket where it was removed, she stayed for a few days to be monitored and has been fine since! There is no scaring or evidence of it at all!! Hope your mare makes a full recovery, keep us posted!

My mare had one & had it removed at Potters Bar. It was the size of a football & weighed 15lbs. Beforehand she was very aggressive, tried to mount my mare etc because she thought she was a stallion. Her other ovary had atrophied. Once the tumour was removed, the ovary that was left started working normally & she got a lot easier to handle.

Basically it involves a GA & quite a long incision up the middle starting from in front of the udder region, then 6 weeks' box rest to make sure she didn't get a hernia, then back into work.

My mare was absolutely fine & went back to competing, but eventually I sold her as with her hormones back to normal, she wasn't aggressive enough jumping.

Just saw that you had originated this thread, so had a look and have just seen your news about Ru. No wonder her behaviour has been like that. I hope you decide to go ahead with the op for her - yes it'll be another worry for you, and with all the extra aftercare it won't be easy, but don't let it get you down too much because it does sound like the success rate is high and you'll have a much happier horse afterwards, with a long and less grumpy future in front of her.

I wish I could offer some advice myself, but as you know already, I've got no experience in the area of ovarian tumours.

Just a quick update,

My little mare has got a date for her surgery and it is next week.

She goes in on Tuesday and is operated on on Thursday.

they are doing it standing through her flank via laparoscapy (sp) so fingers crossed.
