Hey, I need some help in setting up a exercise routine for bringing a horse back to work.
Some information about me first. I've been riding for around 10 years. I have bought a horse back before although he was only out of work for 2 months. I'm 18, 5'6 and 9st. I'm a confident rider and love jumping, I've taken on this horse for a challenge and in the hope to get a fantastic eventer from this.
I've got the horse on loan from a friend. She's a 13 yr old thoroughbred grey mare. Gorgeous in the field and to groom and tack. 5 years ago she was a fantastic eventer and brilliant jumper, in peak condition. She's had a check from the vet and ready to get back to work. She's been lunged occasionally over the past year but hasn't been in a weekly exercise plan for around a year. She was off work due to the owner having a baby which has now gone into two with the horse left to sit in the field with just basic needs tended to. She's very over excited on the lunge rein, often breaks into bucking and jumping in trot and canter. People have ridden her in the past year although never stayed on, she is terribly good at getting riders off although i think it's over excitement. I haven't ridden her as she is unfit and I don't want to cause injury.
Can anyone help put a plan together for me? I want to lunge before to get rid of all this energy before but at the moment I'm not sure if 20 min lunge then riding is too much for her. Sorry for the long post!
