necessary or not? i always have as he wears the same stuff as he would for XC, but having lost one in the deep mud today and completely broken the other (velcro hanging on by a single thread) i'm thinking i cant afford new sets of boots every time we have a hunt on deep going. do i save them for nice ground or does he need them more on deep ground? he's barefoot if that matters at all. thoughts?

If horse is barefoot, can it overreach hard enough to break the skin - I don't know?

My fave OR boots at the moment are the new design westropp petal ones. Much quieter than the old ones, and the top strap is much thicker and more substantial.

Also have profesionals choice and woof kevlar ones for this horse, westropp by FAR the best.

Lucky you being out today BYW - we haven't got out since the 19th.

i would buy new ones but i always boot everything!

sod's law the first time i would go without them my horse would overreach in the first minute!

i love my professional choice ones as they fit very snugly, aren't overly long and always stay put.
quite expensive at around £30 but i know they would stay on in all ground conditions.

maybe the boots did their job and saved an injury?

I would continue to wear them, but perhaps buy cheap or use the ones without velcro (i have had three pairs break the velcro this year, I dont think they cope with mud and wet, the stitching seems to rot and then break)

i wondered whether he'd trodden on one in the deep mud or whether the mud just sucked it off. anyway, i've ordered some more - having tried NEW and cheaper velcro ones which haven't worn well, I've gone for the Professionals Choice Ballistic ones. I dont like the rubber ones without velcro - my boy is funny about having his feet touched and I dont think i'd ever get them on.

I saw a DVD of Mary Kings - Enjoying XC and she uses pull on OR boots but she trims about an inch off so that the boot is only covering the bit of the heel that needs protecting and then there is no overhang. I tried this with my ISH who wears them turned out and out hacking and have not lost a OR boot since )
