My filly is over stepping behind when playing in the field and is pulling her front shoes off weekly.

Would like to try over reach boots but her field is muddy and I am concerned they will rub. She's in at night to dry off.

Any boots better than the others, for not rubbing or chaffing?

my german wb lives in overreachers. he has to as he pulls his shoes off regularly otherwise. He has come down on the nails once causing real problems. regarding the mud, i just wash his feet and boots before he goes to bed. It works for most of the time, however yesterday he caught a shoe and pulled it slightly away from the side. !!!!

go for the rubber bell boots - with velcro - dont go for the ones like pro choice or woof wear with no turn knob - mine had them on a little bit of mud got up under boot it rubbed cause cellulitis - cue 4 days box rest and antibiotics.!!!

But are the rubber ones 'man enough' to prevent shoes from being pulled? I would have thought they'd be a bit thin. Do they work?

I was pondering the Pro Choice pastern wraps
Like these...
They dont have the no-turn knob at the heel... but would they be 'man enough'?

I use cheap rubber ones with velcro on my TB who also wears them all the time whilst turned out. I wash the boots each evening and also wash the stuck on mud off of his hooves and heels. I put a layer of vaseline on his heels every morning before putting the boots on and so far no rubs. We are on clay soil and so far this winter I have lost one boot!

mine has eggbars on and has rubber ones - she hasnt pulled one since but then hasnt got the biggest overtrack!!!! if you got a real puller then you could try ones like those - they were same as ones i had but my horse is accident prone - she only had them on for 8 hrs and came in with tiny mud rub next morning huge legs weeping yellow. - think its as they fit so close and cos of the no turn knob.

My lad has to wear O/R boots for turn out as he reguarly cuts his heels otherwise... I use the rubber ones with velcro and wash the boots out everynight, let his legs dry over night and brush off the mud in the morning, I also use muddy marvel twice a week and so far this winter we've been fine.

mine have them on everyday, and they don't rub, well yet anyway!

Which brand of boots do yours wear?

I would go for the rubber ones. Our racehorses at work used to wear the woofwear ones in muddy fields. most of the horses got small rubs which then turned into weeping infections! they now don't wear any but the rubber ones would be better and easy to clean! I would rub a little vaseline onto the inside of the turn knob too.

I have had 2 sets of the WoofWear ones (over the last 2 winters), and both have not stood up particularly well to mud because the velcro has failed during the winter, and they keep coming off.
I have gone for a rubber set with velcro now. They are MUCH cheaper so I can easily replace them if the velcro fails (which is a possibility given my previous experience with velcro!). Though the rubber ones being lighted may not drag the boot down and pull on the velcro as much?
No rubbing with either brand though.

Mine has eggbars so wears over reach boots when turned out and working. Use Woofwear Kevlar boots, the newest are used for work/hacking and then for turnout when the older ones are no longer functional. These boots are the only ones long enough to cover eggbar. In four years we have only lost one shoe, horse has big over track, never rubbed but make sure I keep them/feet clean. Think I buy approx two pairs/year, depends rather on how long the mud continues, we're on clay in the winter and summer turnout is chalk - shame its not the other way around!

My old mare used to go out in four over-reach boots (she stood on the side of her shoes on the back, crap feet!). I just used the cheap ones with the velcro. The only time they rubbed they just took the hair off, never broke the surface of the skin and she was a particularly sensitive TB mare. They are also much cheaper to replace should your horse rip one off and lose it in the field.

Thanks for the replies. I've decided to try a pair of Woofwear Kevlar boots and see how they work..... fingers crossed. If they rub I'll get a pair of cheap rubber jobbies
