Hi,

I have a 7 yr old WBxTB gelding. I bought him 3 (ish) months ago and everything was great but I did notice he had undercut heels, typical of a TB but I knew my farrier was going to be able to get it right. He is a short Coupled horse and has very good paces and easily tracks up, however my farrier has but on longer shoes to encourage the heel to grow which he keeps pulling of when I am riding him and even in the field. I have bought him several different over reach boots to try and stop him from doing this as it is extremely frustrating for both farrier and me. The latest pair I have bought are the Mark Todd competition boots which are supposed to be no turn. But after having the farrier today to put the shoe back on again I m going to try and get a new pair and was thinking pro choice all round wraps??? Has any one had similar experiences/ some advice that would be of any use as I am going mad here. And to top it all of off the new shoe he put on today is small to try and reduce risk of pulling it off and has made my poor boy lame!!!!

thankyou for reading

One of ours used to do this. What we did was have his hind shoes removed which lessened the times this happened. He is also very short coupled and it worked for him.

Might be worth a try. They carry less weight on their hind feet than their fronts so it's less problematical than taking fronts off and transitioning them to barefoot all round.

We had this problem

with a mare who had remedial shoes. I found that buying rubber / neoprene boots in a size larger than normal did the trick - the boot then sits on the ground and they hit that first. That said, if it's a bad over-reach then they'll get the boots off regardless.......

Good luck

i had remidal shoes on too which keept getting pulled off so used the cheep rubber overreach boots one size to big this seemed to work they do reck them a bit but at £5 per pair did mind if shoes stayed on

My new horse is pulling his shoes off at the moment so have had the same problem I have put Roma Bell overeach boots on him they are the do up ones not pull on, I got them from Rideaway, they have a longer neck so sit better.

Thanks for posts!! went for hack yesterday with his extra thick shires ones on and was fine and have jumping lesson today so fingers crossed!! luckily the lameness was just due to him twisting the shoe on sunday! If I have any more ideas will post them down here for those of you who are also in the same situation.

I hate to say it but my horse still managed to pull shoes off even with over-reaches on, I used equilibrium close-contact chaps and he never pulled a shoe off again, even though they don't protect low enough to stop an over-reach I think they affected the way he moved so he didn't catch himself in the field. Apart from that change farriers, I had a really good farrier at uni and my horse never pulled one of his shoes off so I could turn him out with no boots. Have just moved yards and have a different farrier, horse was shod last week, today 'surprise surprise' lost a shoe, grr!!
