over reach boots....... on the back!! why??

I've always thought you put over reach boots on the front if the horses back leg strikes the front, when jmping or on flat. So why do people have them on the back???
Do any of you use them on the back??
And why??
Several people at my yard do this!

I will put over reach boots on the back of lead horses for tandem/team work.
A welsh pony I rode for someone had them on and I was told it was to stop her cutting off the hair at the coronet so that she looked better in the show ring

My pony has them on her back feet,

but then she walks funny and catches her coronet band. She does look silly but hey if it works I honestly don't care what people think.

As rabatsa said, I would use them on a lead horse in tandem or team driving, but have never heard of them used on the back feet for any other reason.

Mine does after recently managing to over reach and cut just above his cornonet band. Protects the current scab!

I used to use overreach boots on my mares' hind feet - she trod on her own foot and pulled a big chunk of hoof away. The shoe survived even though there were no nails left on the inside. She couldn't have it taken off as she gets extremely footsore even in the field and there was nothing there to hammer more nails into, so I used o/r boots to protect the rest of her hoof and preserve the shoe until her foot grew. Looked stupid but it worked.

I put over-reach on all 4 legs (with travel boots) when travelling my horse as although travels well, is very naughty to box and it prevents him catching himself on the ramp

I use Premier Equine Sports Combi boots on all of my welsh D's legs - only to keep her white socks clean though!! I don't find they restrict her movement, so its easier to use them than to get the mud out of her feathers!

I Occassionally used to use over reach boots on the back as my bay used to catch the inside of the other foot on the coronet and just above but only for a week after he's been shod.

I put over reach boots on the backs one of my horses as his field companion Mac puts his chest against Falco's bum and pushes him around the field and treads on the bulbs of his back heels.

Cropi lives in over reach boots on the front as she has a tendancy to pull her shoes off. When the hunt came a few weeks ago I put them on the back as well, she spent the whole day thumping her back feet like a rabbit

I won't be doing that again!

a friend of mine uses over reach boots on the back for turnout , in case of horse causing injuries to itself , like everyone else has said and also for if there are a few horses turned out , if they are mucking around , galloping about in herd and sometimes over reach on another horses Back legs .

Polo ponies use over reaches on the back I think. Our driving leaders have them on the back for XC only.

I've used them in the past when her shoes have fallen off and there are nails sticking out/clenches are up, stops her cutting herself as she is quite close behind.

I always put overreach boots on the back on one of my endurance horses when competing or training as he has a tendency to tread on himself if the going is muddy or if he gets a little tired. They work a treat - I like using the Robinson's own brand scalloped ones as they're not too long, so protect his heels without getting in the way.

i use overreach boots on the back and front of one of my mares. She doesnt over reach but she interferes [brushes] at the coronet band.

My 18 year old tb (bay in siggy) has arthritis in her hip.

Her hind legs cross over (like a exagerated models walk) when she moves, resulting in her clipping her corronet band, so I use these on her.

I think that some people just do it for fashion though - they see a top rider doing it so they do too. Others may just be neurotic!!!
