My mare is getting through her rubber over reach boots at an alarming rate - we get through 1 pair a week on average and at £10 a pair this isn't overly economical! So I think it's time to upgrade to something a bit tougher.

Unfortunately she's one of "those types" that seems to get rubbed by absolutely everything - so they need to have either very soft padded tops, or fluffy bits of some kind. She currently has the rubber ones with fleece and they don't rub at all.

However the problem I'm finding is that a lot of the "tougher" over reach boots are quite generous in length - she has small hooves and a lot seem to come down too low on the ground, and obviously if they're a stronger material they aren't going to just rip if she catches them - the last thing I want is her treading on them and tripping herself up! - At least with the cheapies I can cut them shorter if need-be!

Does anyone know of any which are a bit shorter in length, yet won't rub her? Many thanks - lemon drizzle cake on offer :wink3: x

Is her hoof balance correct? If her toes are slightly too long it would delay the breakover and cause her to be far more likely to over-reach.

Thank you for your reply Faracat - yes, I think her hooves are fine if I'm honest - they're quite "pony like" really and not too long in the toe, she gets regular farrier visits too. She only tends to "remove" the boots when doing faster work (usually at the weekend hence the once a week order!) or jumping etc when she gets excited and treads all over herself - her movement in walk and trot is generally fine and she rarely catches herself then x

Hi! Have you tried the westropp petal boots? You can cut those shorter quite easily if need be, and because they're designed to spin round during use and if not fitted too tightly, then they shouldn't rub, hopefully... I have found that the newer design ones splits/brakes off from the plastic strap more easily than the older style, though, so if I need more petals, then I look for used ones on ebay. Also, Masta do a basic neoprene overreach boot, which I think comes up shorter than some other over-reach boots. They haven't got the 'anti-spinning heel bobble bit', which I think sometimes causes more problems than they're worth. Good luck in your quest for the perfect booties!

I found woof wear to be very good with my TB who had tiny everything i had the medium on him and he was 16.2 they never dragged on the floor or rubbed him and everything used to rub him they are only about £20. You probably find they rub because they can spin (the rubber ones used to always does this with mine!) the woof wear ones have a nodule in the back which sits in the back of the heel this was the only make i found that didnt spin and therefore didnt rub him raw :)

That sounds good SE. I always think it's worth asking though. :p

My friend who has egg-bars on her TB is using Woof Wear Kevlar OR boots. You can cut them shorter and so far they haven't rubbed and he's wearing them full time.

Hi, I have the woof ones that are more expensive, but they have sheepskin around the top and you can cut them to size. They are made from something really strong, but I can not think of the name of the stuff, they are around 30 pounds so not cheap but they are to ne worth the money.

I use premier equine kevlar no turn boots, they are often in the sale and seem to last the longest even against the cheap ones and aren't too long (horse has dinky feet)

I also use these premier equine ones and they are really great. My horse is very hard on them as he is also turned out in them to prevent him pulling his shoes off as he's very lively in the field to say the least! They fit really well and aren't loose like I was finding the rubber ones to be. Reasonably priced too.

I'd fine ones that don't rub and then cut them to the right length - nice and short

I'm nervous of 'tough' ones as I've seen some nasty falls when horses have stood on the back of them and face planted so I always go for cheap rubber ones that will rip before trip!!

Wow, thank you so much for all of the suggestions - I may invest in a few and see how we get on!

^ I completely forgot about Westropps! I have a pair stored away which I use for XC / fun rides etc and don't remember those rubbing... will be raiding ebay for petals though as I think we may only have about 3 left after our last outing!

Have you tried racebands?

They fit tight and snug around the heel and are v good!
Sorry to sound completely dim - whereabouts would I find these? Are they similar to the prolite wraps or am I way off? :redface3:

Thanks again all, help yourselves to that lemon drizzle! x

Masta Neoprene Over-reach Boots!!

Would never go back to rubber ones (horse got through several pairs a month) - these are a godsend, and not expensive. Mine has sensitive skin too and not had any issues with these rubbing. Also tiny feet, he used to stand on the rubber ones but these are short enough for that not to be an issue.

Another vote for woof wear boots, I had a similar problem with my youngster and found them to be the best fit and non rubbing.
