Hi
I brought my horse into ride yesterday and noticed he had a cut/gash just above his heel.
It looks like an over reach type injury, although the rest of his heel is a bit scabby too. Hes not got back shoes on so i dont know how hes managed to do it.

Was just wondering the best way you thought to treat this would be?

I trotted him up and he was slightly lame, though he wasnt reluctant to trot and he still had his ears forward but there was still the odd lame step.

Ive been washing it out just by cold hosing for 5-10 mins then i put some purple spray on.

Would you be doing something else? Was going to put sudocream on aswell?

Hes living out 24/7, if it was your horse you you leave him out or bring him in?

any help appreciated
thanks

Hello

My boy overreached into his heel bulb a few months ago (even had overreach boots on but tore it off!). He was hoping lame and because he had a cut on his tendons we took him to the vets for an x-ray as well - all clear and it was the heel that made him so lame. The vets cleaned it all out with iodine and bandaged him up. They told me that because of the fact it was on an area that re-opens when they walk to keep him as immobile as possible and also to keep the dirt out (his was quite deep). He stayed in for a week!

I had to change the bandage as necessary and once it had healed partially let the air get to it. He went slightly mental after a week so i turned him out (vets wanted him in till it has fully healed) and put Derma Gel on it (white toothpaste type tube with red sticker on the front, get it from the vets or saddlers). The vets gave it to me to use and said it acts as a barrier layer to stop dirt getting in and allows the skin to stay moist but still breathe!

Hope this helps?

After it has healed i would put overreach boots on to stop it happening again! x

Could be mud fever, it often looks like an over reach mark, and especially if the rest of the heel is a bit scabby!
