Maybe try a plain french link snaffle rather than a hanging cheek to give your horse something more to work into if he keeps dropping behind the contact, you could try a fulmar version if you are having steering issues.
Yes I was thinking of trying a full cheek, would you stick with the french link?
The more tense or excited he gets the more he tucks his nose into his chest no matter how much leg you use (even with spurs). He goes lovely at home, he only seems to do it when I am doing a test!
He also has a tendency to lean down really low and snatch at the bit when hunting & xc, although I wouldn't say he is strong.
I went back to a Nathe. My trainer recommends them aswell and starts all of hers in them, as encourages to take the contact forward. The steering is prob down to the horse dropping the contact and drifting through shoulders?
If he is happy at home in a french link then I would stick with it, maybe give your self longer working in and really work on getting him to work into a decent contact
They are nice bits, but only if they fit the horses mouth comformation. Mine cant wear one because he has a dinky mouth and it would interfere with the roof of his mouth. Have a Tranze link that he goes well in, but can still be reluctant to take the contact forward.
What if you try and take him somewhere else for a lesson or a schooling session then the pressures not always there when he goes away, that way neither you or him is tense/worried/excited, then he might lose a bit of his tension or apprehnsion when he's out competing?
(just thinking if he goes well at home in the bit your using then there might be another way to combat the problem as it would be a shame to change out of something he normlly does well in)
