Ill try and keep this brief!

My lad is currently on box rest for a torn SDFT in his near fore.

This morning i was clearly half asleep and forgot to take his ice vibe boots off so bless him hes been stood in them for 4 hours, i put them back on the 20 min cycle and then took them off... Now his near fore was fine but his off fore was puffy :( why??

Im really not very happy with this leg, this was the leg that had heat and slight swelling in after the xc so then i decided to withdraw him and get it scanned.... Got it scanned and its fine well the tendon stucture is fine but the tendon itself is enlarged (apprently due to an old injury which wasnt picked up in my 5 stage vetting- but thats another story!) it was this scan that showed up the tear on the near fore.... I wasnt expecting that!

So my question is!!

Why is it still getting puffy? I understand he was probably over compensating on the xc run hence the heat and swelling post xc but can he really still be overcompensating stood in a stable or is there something more sinister going on that was missed by the scan?! If so what could it be? Im probably worrying over nothing but i just want my fixed competition pony back i would hate for this to set him back :(

He goes in on monday for a rescan so will get my vet to triple check then... Its back to normal now so wont waste a call out fee

Any ideas? Or am i just over worrying?

no, ive been told to leave both unbandaged, they have been fine for 5 weeks even when hes been a prat on it but today when he hasnt done anything its puffy! i just find it a bit strange! i would have put it down to just being stuck in and not moving much if it wasnt this leg! or if it was more than just one leg!

i cant help thinking its something to do with this apparent old injury he has :(

If it's any comfort, my horse has a fetlock that puffs up when he's in (he also has some signs of an old injury on that leg) and he's fine. I just try to keep him stabled as little as possible and warm him up carefully.

thanks pigeon :) im just going to make my vet scan and scan and scan it just to make sure on monday!!!

my boy also has a front leg that swells when he is in. he had tendons fired as a race-horse, and vet recons that scar tissue has cause the lymphatics/ drainage to not be as good in that leg. i have found a stable bandage stops it from swelling, presumably because it keeps in warm and supports. it doesn't cause any problem, except when i tried box rest for something else he had, the leg swelled so much after 24 hours in that he went lame on it. with bandage he is now fine.

yeah i did think it could be something like this but strangely its only swelled when i left these boots on him today (which i never ever do, must have been asleep this morning at 6.30!!) and they werent on tight at all... im just overthinking it i hope :/

My horses legs fill when he is stood in as well.

But do go with your gut instinct. I spent a couple of weeks with a niggling feeling that he wasn't quite right behind, vet just said he looked stiff and his flexion tests came back fine. I got a physio out to him who found evidence of an old, probably untreated injury which explained why when ridden I felt like he was lame behind but being trotted up looked fine. She gave me a couple of exercises to do with him and fingers crossed so far so good.

Not the same as your situation I know, but I tend to go with my gut, and I'm the worlds best over-thinker ;)
